fitting rocovery hooks to the escudo

after reading some posts about standard tow hooks not up to being used for recovering a stuck veihcle and doing a search on the forum i had a look at the front and rear of the escudo for places to mount hooks as its got a tow bar i take it you can remove tow ball or whole tongue and fit a shackle there instead at the front there doesnt look to be a good spot where have you guys put a front hook

I've just finished putting my hook on the front on Sunday, and this is what I came up with:



It's a piece of 25x10 flat bar 150mm long up inside the chassis rail that I drilled and tapped to take the M12 bolts that came with the hook. The flat bar extends quite a way back inside the chassis rail for a cantilever type effect when the load comes on. After I take it back off to paint the steel, I'll put a piece of 5mm plate between the outside of the rail and the hook, just for extra load spread. My whole idea was to spread the load along the surface and it should all stay connected under load. Oh yeah, and do it cheaply...

i did basically the same as above. but i welded a nut onto the flatbar instead of tapping a thread into it, and i only used 5-6mm bar, im not sure if 10mm plus the nut would fit under the round cross member inside the chassis. i have mine off at the moment if you want to have a look at the brackets? I to have done much the same as above but there is a nut in the cross member tube and a nut on top of the flat bar. Only place to put on really, but a bloody pain in the arse to get to when your stuck as its usually buried in mud. Best to leave a rope attached to it.

and i think i have my hook pointing down, not up.

second that too. Mine is down, wouldn't want it pointing up in my opinion as it puts strain on the end of the hook, more likely to bend it off.

there doesnt seem to be many good places to put it unless maybe i cut the bumper or remove it would like to make a basic front bar for it that would make things easier

Bits4vits sell (or sold) a front recovery bar that looked pretty good - a bar that ran through the front tube cross member. Perhaps have a look at some of the pictures and reverse engineer something?

By the way, is your a 2 door or a 4 door?

and i think i have my hook pointing down, not up.

after you get sick of the strop falling off all the time you can always put the hook the right way up

Has anyone got tips on places to mount them on the rear? Don't have a tow bar or anything to bolt them to.

I have it mounted upside down which is a pain but works alright.

Front bolt is mounted in the original captive nut for the tie down and the other has a hole drilled through the chassis from top to bottom and a long bolt that goes all the way through.
