TD42 Blk Smoke ques

1991 TD42, 230k, non turbo.. steady 160k daily use.
on the hills, and planting foot - steady stream of black smoke... (not blocking out view)
oil and air filters changed 3monthly.
Fuel filter to be done this weeknd... what should be my next check?
Pump service? and then iof no imporvemnt, new injectors?
any other tips would be very useful

Turn othe pump back a little.
When I went for the test drive on my current one it smoked when you put your foot down (heaps). I turned it back about half a turn on the pump and it now blows nothing unless you giving it heaps and even then its only a small amount.

black smoke can only mean two things, too much fuel or not enough air, maybe even check your intake, then wind the fuel down i guess, but if u think about it, if everything has been stock on it, and you havent touched the fuel pump, then i would have a look at the intake. Thats just my 2cents tho

i'd be getting injectors/pump looked at. If there is going to be a bit of time till it gets done then i'd be turning pump down 1/4 turn at a time till smoke has gone.
Reason is black smoke = to much fuel= high exhaust gas temps= melted pistons. Wont happen instantly but will happen

Hi I would get the injectors
serviced by a good diesel pump service shop , they will set up fuel mix after refiting

I'd take that to 3 things. Not necessarily too much fuel, but could be unatomised fuel.
If its never been tampered with, (eg pump never wound up) my guess would be injectors not misting fuel enough (eg worn nozzles), so fuel cannot be burnt efficiently.
Turning fuel down will mask the problem (and be better for longevity of engine), but will reduce power also.
Prob best to talk to a diesel fuel shop about cost of getting injectors tested/rebuilt.

shouldnt it be running rough if the fuel isnt atomizing properly?

Won't run rough as most fuel will be burnt (say maybe 90%), but as isn't a fine mist some can't burn in time, and is spat out exhaust as black smoke.
But because not all burnt also lower power, higher egt, poor economy.
My thoughts anyways,

Another thing to which I just done to mine which is the same age and similar milage is to take the intake mainfold off and give it a good clean out with some solvent based degresser or similar. After doing mine it went heaps better as the intake mainfold had alot of sludge build up in it

Just had the injectors serviced, new tips etc, on my recent purchase, LN106 Hilux 2.8 non turbo, with 320,000km
The injectors were well worn, maybe had never been serviced.
Cost less than $500, while it wasn't bellowing black smoke, the emissions are now a lot cleaner and power increase is impressive, must almost be back to 91 horses it had when new

the service life on the nissan injectors are 100,000kms and most have never been done, pluse they run a very low opening pressure so if the nozzle is work it will open too soon and doesn't burn very well. if you're not to bad with the spanners they are pretty easy to pull out and if you take them to a reconditioners they can test them first to see if they are worn. i doubt they would charge much to test them (the guys in nelson dont charge anything). also if you pull the banjo bolt out of the main fitting on the back of your pump and its all black and crappy thats a good sign the seals in the pump are starting to go. but my guess would be injectors for this issue.
