Rainbow Road is a public road

Representatives of Public Access NZ (PANZ) have been researching and getting opinions from qualified surveyors about the real status of the road running from Lake Tennyson to the north of St Arnaud, known as the Rainbow Road. So far all opinions identify the road, as marked on the attached survey map dated 1970 and signed by the Chief Surveyor, as a public road. Travellers are presently obstructed by an adjacent landowner who claims the road is private, simply because it is not defined as legal road on current cadastral maps.
As PANZ understand the situation on the ground, this road not being specifically surveyed is a distinct advantage to the public in this case. By law it is still deemed a road and the public enjoy the same rights of passage as over any other road and it runs right through the property continuously! This road is simply ‘awaiting’ a survey if required, as are thousands of back country roads in NZ.
