03 Grand Cherokee - Power steering pressure hose leak

Post by TJ »

Well, looks like my Grand Cherokee has developed this leak. I will try and ask the dealer for hose price (I will make sure I am sitting down first - being prepared for the shock of my life).

Out of interest has anyone got it from Rockauto.com - did the part fit correctly on 4.7l V8? Mopar part nbr: 5019708AE is just a few dollars more from US. Freight would be same. Out of US, part and freight should be around USD 150.

This is where mine is leaking.

This video on Youtube shows exactly what mine is nearly doing. BTW, this is not my video.

can you get a hydraulic hose place to make you up a new hose or some new fittings, I've had quite a few done by pirtec and enzed for my trucks and repowers

edit*
I just run a couple of generic high pressure hoses and get new elbow fittings made up for the ends to fit different P/S pumps and boxes, I can steal bits off either truck if I get caught out needing quick spares :D

Thats an interesting idea. I will try and talk to them in the morning. On these Grands, Jeep has a hydraulic fan which is connected to the power steering pump as well. It goes from the power steering pump to the fan motor, from there it goes to the steering box, external cooler and then return. There is a whole bunch of hydraulic pipes and fittings.

This is what the pipe looks like

I got a mobile pirtek guy to do a couple of hoses for me, would easily make that up. He made up a hose similar to the top half of yours with four fittings a bit of flex hose and bent up a piece of solid for 100 cash. Thought it was very reasonable.

Pressure hose as well as the fitting were stuffed somehow, steerjng fluid was starting to get aerated. Not a good thing. Got it sorted by Continental Cars (dealer), a good price for a genuine parts fix. New hose is designed slightly differently to eliminate the problem in future.

I couldn't risk cooling fan not working and cooking the engine if power steering ran dry or with aerated fluid. .
