I had an sj410 with a 1.8 turbo diesel isuzu motor. It went real well, could pull 5th gear up any hill at 100kmh on the open road, and plenty of go off the road too. The bonus was it went better than the petrol under wanter aswell

Why? Deisels are heavy, have limited revs, and usually not very powerful either. Be much easier to put a 1600 out of a Vitara/Escudo in.

most puddles are bigger than a suzi, one that can swim got to be a good thing?

I had a nissan cd17 1.7l turbo engine in my 413 it was the best thing ever, alot better compared to a petrol one i had, it had the tourque the petrol doesnt and could just hold its revs and crawl up anything. The best thing about it is it bolted in just with an adapter plate i still have the adapter plate here

i love diesels, sure they dont have the horses but they would win in most drag races (towing something of corse

)
And they are sooo cheap to run these days lol.

Maybe, but the 1600 has a lot more torque than the 1300, there would be a lot less mucking around to fit one as well because you can use the standard gearbox.

Well that crazy green thing is definitely an exception...

I reckon if you want economy and torque put the diesel in (make sure it's a turbo) if you can afford it otherwise the vitara conversion is a good cheaper alternative.
If you want to tow go diesel, petrols are nowhere near as good. I towed a horse float with a 1kz diesel Prado then tried it with a 1fz petrol 80 series and the little 1kz had way more torque where it was needed.

i had a similar experiance with a v6 surf vs my td27 terrano,
the v6 was gutless as towing anything, and the ranno held on fine, used less fuel too.

Why would you buy a suzuki for towing? They are only rated to tow 450kg, and towing anything heavier would probably put too much force on the towbar mounting bolts due to the way they mount. Not to mention the gearing will be all sorts of wrong, they run at 3500rpm at 100km/h from factory, don't think many diesels would like that.

I had a 410 diesel for a short while with a nissan diesel (don't remember model) in it and now I've got rotazuks old samurai with a 2ct toyota motor in it (from a turbo liteace or similar). Turbo diesel is unreal in a suzuki. People always bag on stuff they have no experience with
Given the amount of messing around to make it work a 1600 IS easier but the diesel is good. Given your probably limited to smaller diesels you'd have to remember they can run heads/gaskets if not maintained and sucking in water is the death of them.
As for gearing I never set them up as they were bought completed but it was better than any stock samurai on the road. The 410 could tow a tandem full of digger track links fine.

maybe some sort of mid mount diesel out of a peugeot or mabye even a ld20 would do it for a club truck.
Aparently some of the newer suzukis come with the option of diesel engine, i think they are mazda or something, just going off what im told.

That is sexy, I just had a mini-diesel-orgasm.
My next truck, whatever the brand will be diesel, I drool regularly over the '04 and '05 turbo diesel Vitaras that pop up on trademe every now and then.

Diesels are all good. I would rather have more torque than more power in all honesty. Vitara have had 2L turbo diesels. Both mitsi and pug units. Mitsi sucks but the pug is alright.

X2 I agree with Lincooln, what is it with all this power and noise, I rather have a Diesel and have the low down torque with as little amount of power to gain the same result.
Dont get me wrong I do like the sound a V8 Lexus but to me it just noise.

they never had mitsi engines , the early ones were mazda diesels .
I always keep a look out for a wrecked 02 vitara diesel for a swap , the later ones were no auto that I want .

And just last week I was wondering if you wanted to sell it . What state is it in now ?
A little heavy in the front but was fun dragging fxgt's and Si civic's off the line back in the day

It takes a bit to bog her down...it's not quite an Signature 600 but it beats a screaming petrol IMO

i think it will be cheaper buying a complete diesel one to be honest, looking at those prices, and at least you wont have any problems to do with conversions eyc.

From the first trade me link
"This is a five door Vitara Turbo Diesel model with the good, inter-cooled, Mazda diesel engine, not the later Grand Vitara Diesel which got some bad reports about that later diesel engine."
No experience with the 2006 onwards renault diesels but the peugeot engine is better than the mazda hands down and yes I have had both .
The thread is about a 413/samurai diesel . Never seen a factory one in NZ . Net story's about them in other oddball countries thou .

Yeah zooks go well with diesels in them. I had a LJ81 for a while there with a Nissan CD17 in it. I bought it with a snapped Cambelt (pistons had hit valves) and rebuilt the engine (made it a cat look-a-like). Also added a turbo at the same time. It was mated up to a 5 speed nissan box, went really well, went heaps better than my 1300cc SJ413...

Renault diesels are great when not in a Renault with Renault wiring. Just look at the new 550 Navara that has a Renault diesel V6 turbo. They seem to be able to sort a diesel engine, best they do anyway seeing as the diesel market in Europe is so big.

It's been known for a while that the only good automotive system made in Europe is diesel engines.
