Hi have a 85 yn60 surf it has the laps belts in the rear like all the others ive owned and seen, but having two young boys id rather have the sash belt type.
On alot of the U.S sites I see their 4runners of the same age have a factory roll bar with sash belts on them, What im wondering is if I was able to get one of these bars would it be legal or certable being factory? or did they all have them and were removed when they were imported as they were deemed unsafe?
any input would be great.
Thanks Stu

there is a little history behind the JDM and US surf/4runners and go goes a little like this.
The US government to protect there own light truck market put big tarriffs on imported light trucks , so in order for the likes of nissan toyota and mazda to get around this issue they stopped importing the hilux and started fitting 4/5 seat capability to the hilux surf/ 4 runner with a fibre glass shell added as apposed to the JDM steel body SUV. also why the US 4 runner was a 2 door.
it got imported, stripped the back and rear seats out and you had a "ute" again.
The roll bar wasn't deamed unsafe it was a factory addition. it was cheaper to fit it and seatbelts with a rear seat, then for toyota to pay the tarriff on a 2 seater single cab well side hilux.
Your best bet is(but i doubt it) is to ring around every wrecker of SUV's and see if any surplus 4 runners didn't make it to the states and got sent to NZ instead. other wise try Ebay.
then there is the issue of ensuring your particular hiux surf has the allowances in the body work for said roll bar..... if not then it will need a cert. if the nuts are welded into the body from factory you are good to go roll bar wise, you will still need to look up the rule book on the seatbelts though, they may require you to install brand new ones.

If the nuts are there you are good to go with the bar.

Does it have the seatbelt attachments? I was able to make one with some pre bent tubes but no belt holders.
