as long as it is not more than 20persent more power than what was in it and its put in safe and strong and tidy you have no regs problems you do a change of fuel thing
you need have a chat to a diesel out fit in KIAIPO spell that wrong not far from cristchurch

Hey I'm from West Aus so as for the power increase it doesn't matter as long as the capacity doesn't increase more than 30%

that power rule does not apply here, my engine is more than twice as power as standard...still got standard brakes also, no problems getting paper work.
As for displacement you poor western australians have it rough, found it very hard to mod vechiles when i was living there, over here that isn't really an issue either, many mates have put lexus / chev v8s in hilux utes which had the old 2.4 diesels
Back to original post is it manual or auto? 4x4 or 2wd?

Is your Navara manual / auto, 4x4 or 2wd?
If it is the auto they share the same transmission so would make your job much easier just be a case of changing bell housing and torque converter over, as for engine mounts i am not 100% sure but am sure i have read that these share the same mounting platforms, will have a read. As for the little things such as radiator ect they will be interchangeable.
Radiator should be sweet (easy swap if not)
fuel lines it would be a case of removing in tank fuel pump and doing the reverse of what i did in my conversion (pics there) so you will just need to weld length of pipe to reach bottom of tank.
Return will be fine.
A few lengths of hose will easy mount the diesel primer in engine bay.
The petrol to diesel conversion straight forward its the trans changing / mod that might be little bit of playing around
Edit: Also have to budget for exhaust system and wiring, the TD27 is electrically simple, pentiometer (throttle position sensor) on diesel pump for auto trans, glow plugs (can wire manually), RPM signal on diesel pump for dash gauges, 2x coolant temp possibly 1x dash gauge 1x ECU? then typical A/C, starter, alternator which will be interchangeable. Should no be drama getting engine to run without ECU as it mainly controls EGR crap which you can remove.
Have looked on internet and it seems to be a rare conversion as bugger all information..but a little bit of common sense an forum use on here and it easily achievable

Gee guys, read carefully before hitting the keyboard.
The chap wants info on swapping a TD27T into a petrol D21 Navara, not a lecture on what the legal requirements are.
Being in Western Aussie he will have his own transport rules to abide by, so meantime keep to the topic and question in hand.
He needs to know things like
What is required for such a swap?
Are bell housings, gearboxes the same, engine mounts?
Are fuel tank and fuel line changes required?
And what about cooling? same radiator or is it different?

Thx Ralfie !
Yea as ralfie said i need info on the conversion
Im shaw someone has done this before , and this site seems to have the most info , ive searched but couldnt find much.
Just to clarify it is a 1988 D21 4wd Navara with Z24 and a manual
I intend to put a TD27T and Trans , either manual or auto it will depend on the donor vehicle.
Any help appreciated

Good idea on getting a matching trans with the new motor... personally I would go for a 5-spd manual, mainly because it will bolt straight in, but also because your truck, as a Z24 5-speed, has low 4.88 gears from the factory (transaxle code CA48. With an auto you'd prob need to regear to get acceptable road performance. And because your rear diff is a C200 salisbury type, you can't just swap the gears from the donor terrano, which will be an H233 rear. The problem then is that the terrano is coil sprung whereas the Navara is leaf sprung, so rolling the diff under the navara and fabbing leaf mounts etc becomes an expensive pain in the arse.
My truck has the same configuration - TD27T, 5spd, 4.88 gears. For day to day use its gearing is pretty bloody low... ie well over 3000rpm @ 95kph! Low range is awesome though, ie idles up 40 degree incline
The turbo really helps, and you don't need to stir the gearbox to ride the torque wave. But I would imagine an auto would be a mess with 4.8s.

My mistake, I thought turbo auto terrys were 4.6... out of interest whats your transaxle code?

Thx for the replys guys , I'm not worried about the gearing as the low gear will be good for towing the boat along the beach

I think swapping everything over from the terrano will be my easiest way to get it all done.

you will need/have on hand for swap
TD27T
bellhousing,gearbox/trans with transfer case.
If using auto need gearshift setup for trans tunnel.
auto trans ecu
drive shaft (auto/manual are different lengths)...front and rear
engine mounts and gearbox mounts
Drive shaft carrier bearing/mount(in case they are different)
fuel filter for engine bay
engine and dash harness (mistral/terrano II) dashboard complete with harness would make things easier mating up the wiring loom of engine to dash cluster. (full swap).
(including speedo drive to keep odometer accurate.)
Fuse box loom from dash to engine bay(this includes the wiring for the fuel cut off glow plugs etc.
Steel fuel rails that clip to the firewall in the engine bay.
Glow plug timer(as above grab complete dash and loom and just swap aswell)
keep the fuel pump in the tank(makes a good primer)
risk of using auto trans in manual there is no ignition lock or relay to stop it being started in gear.
IT is important to take the time to change over all the harnesses as it makes life so much easier then having to pay a sparky to mate up different wiring loom sections to get things working, It makes everything plug and play.
I did this with a RB30det into a hilux and retrimed and retro fitted the dashboard from the R32 skyline aswell.
The only original wiring left in the hilux were the wires to the trailer plug and back lights.

Thx Crash
That basically confirms what i thought , i will have to swap EVERYTHING from the donor vehicle across.
It will be a month or 2 until i get started ( have to find donor vehicle) but when i do i will put up a build on here.
Thx for the help Guys

Gearbox is the same between z24 and td27, the exception being the bellhousing (you may find its only the top two bolts that are different, but starter may well be positioned differently also)
Get the diesel engine mounts- I believe they'll bolt to your chassis making the engine pretty much bolt in.
You got powersteering? Check lines, they could well be different.
Wiring will be easy to get running if you don't mind electrics, getting tacho working will be the hard bit. Z24 alternator may be external regulator type (depending on year), but is easy to change wiring to suit internal type.
Get all the airbox and plumbing from donor vehicle, or just run a pod filter.
Exhaust may need different front section to match up to diesel setup.
Knowing Nissan, it won't be a hard conversion. The more bits you get from donor vehicle the easier it'll be tho.
Go for it!

sounds like it might be easier doing a body swap

that way ya get coils and get away from the c200 diff aswell......
ive heard somewhere that the same models ya dont need certification (dont rely on this info, just going of what i was told)
gotta love the td27's though, brilliant engines..

Yea i looked into doing a body swap but its gonna be just as much if not more work to change over.
From everything i can find the TD27T are one of the best small capacity diesel engines around.
I just need to find the right donor vehicle now and i can start the build.

Nuthin wrong with the C200 mate! Guys w/MK Patrols run 35s on them with lockers, Perhaps I'm just saying that because I'm running C200s!
ps I'm still looking for another C200 R&P 4.88 ratio

its easier to change a banjo style diff when it breaks though lmao
