Recently rebuilt my hubs completely.
But cant seem to stop water going in.
All seals are brand new.
New wiper seals , new felts, new gaskets with silicone on them & also new aisin free wheeling hub rubber seals.
Is dripping from bottom of one of the lower steering arms bolts.
Any ideas????

The water gets in thru the CV side of the stub axle and goes to the freewheel hubs first , then to the outer hub bearings, some stub axles 1990 onwards came out with an oil type seal in behind the bronze bush in the stub axle to help stop this water getting in.

Also put new axle seal (the one inside the diff ) & also new spindles that had new brass bushes already installed in them.

Just taken hub off , spindel off & removed axle/cv ..water throughout the knuckle , bearings etc ...but no water in diff ...so is getting in somewhere in hub im guessing....think ill replace the bearing seal & outer hub seal with genuine toyota ....dont think water is getting in thru swivel seal...unless anyone has any other ideas.

what sort of condition is the spindle in where the oil seal runs around it, is it worn/grooved or rusted, my front spindles seal reasonably well but my rear full floater is badly worn where the seal runs and leaks water like a seive

Spindles are brand new ...got them about 4 weeks ago

opp's sorry thought I'd just read that in there somewhere, couldnt see it the second time I guess that rules the spindles and oil seals out then unless their of inferior quality or something?

I checked how the seals etc fit around them & seem good ....got spindles from lineside..there stuff is generally ok.

This is what I've come to believe. Thats why I copied others, filling the swivel housing with grease (you can add a nipple to that knuckle bung). Still hasn't stopped water ingress but slowed it heaps. My understanding of swivel seals are that they all leak, but how much is the question. Thats why I fill mine with grease so they grease leaks out not water in. It doesn't help when every thing is up to operating temperature and we dive into the first river crossing, something I do often

You'll probably say yes........You're definately using the solid axle spindle seal (Rear hub seal) and not the IFS ones, the IFS seals have same outside diameter but inside diameter slightly larger.

Are you oiling the felt wiper seal??
Some people put it on dry... and all it does is become a wick..
I soak mine on engine oil...For one it goes on easier.... and also provides a good seal...But messy but works...
Every time I open my hubs / swivel hubs I havent noticed much in the way of free water. The I don't normally go wading thru rivers, but do muddy water filled bog holes...

Yep .... Have gone to genuine toyota ones how ,,, they seem to be a tighter fit.

They went on dry ... Ill unbolt the backing plate thingy then get oil can onto it and see if it helps.

That a damn fine idea for a hippy watering lovin baby like myself. I'll be doing mine next time I have to change them. Which will be soonish....... Thanks for the idea

In the Zuks , I pack the shaft of the CV and inside the spindle with a super tachy black lithium based water proof mining machinery grease .
as there is generally low speed / heat, it works great at keeping water out of the hubs . And it doesn't seem to mix with the moly CV grease or travel into the hub.
Even worked with IFS surf CVs.
