Newbie with a terrano/now Landcruiser!

Hi all bought this terrano today, it is my second one, this has has a lift kit and 32" wrangler muddies on it tjm bull bar and some small spotties, today i put some home made flares on it. next on the list will be go for a wof after xmas and fit a snorkel.

A question about the terrano, ive noticed it rubs quite bad on hard lock at the bottom rear of the front gaurds, would a body lift kit fix this or would i need to mod the gaurds?

From my experience with these rigs, you have several options re the rubbing issue.

-adjust the locknuts on the wheels out, this will reduce turning circle but may be enough to clear the guards, keeps cv joints at a reasonable angle too

-try a different wheel offset or rim size

-consider switching to 10.5 width tyres and zero off set rims (factory spec)

-trim the guards slightly

-2" body lift


Do you know what offset/rim width it's currently running?

id go for trimming the guards if you dont want to worry about certification

Failed wof on rear part of the exhaust being filled with rusty holes so getting that replaced tomorrow and she will be all legal very happy cant wait to take it on its first voyage, just need to invest in some recovery gear first just incase

Nice truck, Have you considered re-doing the whole exhaust? Did mine from the turbo with 2.5", made a massive improvement. There are quite a few posts on here from people that have done the same.

Passed the wof the other day so she is all road legal went for a fishing trip up lake Heron up the Ashburton gorge, and had a look up lake emily? aswell, good we trip.
Now im just waiting on a spare tyre to arrive like the ones that are on the truck as it currently doesnt have one so once that has arrived will be keen to do a couple of trips with you fellas.

Hey yeah there are a few places to go up there, some good fishing and hunting provided you can get access from the property owners.

Bit of an update on the Terrano, gearbox shat itself a couple of months ago on a hunting trip so have been "thinking" about getting the gearbox out for the time and now winter is just about here i thought i better get my arse into gear and get it fixed before some snow arrives. And im getting itchy feet wanting to get out in the bush
So far i have started removing all the bits around the box, drive shafts ect, just trying to figure out how to get the torsion bars out. Im assuming you have to remove the adjuster bolts completly to get them out, will have a go after work any way. Will try and get some pics up aswell while im at it. Will most likely replace the clutch while im at it and a few bushes while its in the air.

Put a block/jack under the lower control arm to compress the suspension a bit. Unload the torsions by backing off the adjuster bolt completely. Usually you can get a wrench wedged against the transfer case to hold the nut. Once all the tension is released, remove bolt & mark the position of the adjuster relative to the torsion bar. Tap the adjuster off the torsion bar, towards the rear of the vehicle. Remove adjuster, muscle torsion bar out of LCA.

When you reinstall the torsions you may have to re-index them in order to set the ride height, which is just a fancy way of saying moving the adjuster down 1 or 2 splines from the matchmark you made when removing them.

Be very careful when working around torsion bars as they store a tremendous amount of energy

Its a manual, its had a bad wine since i bought it so i new it was only a matter of time.
Awesome cheers for the advice. How hard is it to drop the box with just a jack or would you recomened removing the transfer case seperate to make it a bit lighter?

Gravity works well for removing old gearbox
Lots to take out to remove them. Can recommend using two jacks and some small ratchet tie straps to help put another one in. You can use the straps to make a cradle that can be adjusted up or down by tying between the chassis rails
Cool looking truck though, but then i have a soft spot for 3drs.

Cheers i love the look of them as well, only problem is im running 32x12.5 R15s which no one seems to make any more and the rims are 15x10s, so im thinking i either go for 32x12.5s and a body lift to help them fit or would some 32x10.5 i think they are fit on my rims ok?

Lighter the better IMO. I run factory Lego 15x7 alloys which have 4.5" backspacing, which will allow me to fit 33x10.5 BFGs with no cutting or flares. Thats a really light rim and a really light tyre, but a true 33"

IFS loves a narrower tire/rim

thats why im a bit worried about my rims they are quite a low offset, ill post a couple of photos after work tomorrow, they are a really nice 3 peice rim but may not be suitable for the truck, what offset rims do you use?

I think they're 0 or even positive offset

They were standard on SE V6s, 31s were a factory option

Finally got motivated enough to take the gearbox out of the terrano, was a lot easier than i thought it would be.
Will replace the clutch as well while ive got the box out, anything else i should be looking at replacing while im at it?

While you've got flywheel off being faced for new clutch, replace the rear main seal

Finally fixed the pics

Ordered some bits for the terrano the other day, and they arrived today, new clutch, release bearing, rear main and gear lever boot.


Removed old clutch, wasnt too bad but worth doing while the box was out



Got the fly wheel machined

ANNnnd all back togeather, now just waiting on gearbox to arrive and put

Quick question, does it have a spigot bearing for the gearbox input shaft to locate into?

If it does, make sure its also replaced.

They have a brass bush in back of crank, rather than a bearing. Worth checking as sometimes they get flogged out. With gearbox out its the perfect time to access EGR crossover pipe to remove and blank off. Put a EGT probe in exhaust blank while you there

Yeah i had a look at the bush it seemed fine, was going to replace it but than forgot hopefully it will be sweet, murphys law though it will shit its self if i dont replace it
And good idea for the EGR will look into that
