Installing rear Diff locka - Help

Post by MNC »

Hi Guys, sorry no photos yet just found my camera!

I'm mid way through instaling a rear diff locka in my FJ40.

Got all the old bits out got all the new bits in - all up about 1hr - awesome didnt even read the instructions. Opps forgot to put the thrust washers back in. Dissasembled put in thrust washers and put back together sweet. Opps forgot clips on end of axels that stop em sliding right out of the housing.

OK, pulled apart read instructions - first line "Read instructions completely before beginning" shit!

Right so I`ve put the clips on once with the thrust washers and then again without the thrust washers but now I can only get the left spacer into the cam gear and then I cant fit the right spacer in the gap between the left spacer and the end of the right axel (gap is not big enough).

Any ideas guys??? Something I`m doing wrong???

 sounds interesting. my sugestion...

pull it all out and start over again,go slowly, dont rush it,there are a few little steps that need to be done carefully and if you get them wrong it wont work.

read the instructions again and look at the pictures carefully, then go through it step by step.

i think i had mine in and out about 5 times before i was happy with the result and boxed it up   ... got pretty good at it in the end 8)

One of the Lockrits , you leave out the thrust washers, and on a later type, the left them in.
Check the manual , and read it step by step.

Man, I should have read the instructions first up

I`ll have another go tomorrow and hopefully manage to get it in. Will try and take some photos 2.

OK Got the locka in but the right wheel isn`t unlocking when spinning forwards. I`ll put the Thrust washers in tomorrow and see if that fixes it.

Photos to come sorry guys.

Sometimes you need to turn it the otherway to unlock it then spin it forward. At least with mine it works like that.

Was there a " square No Go gauge" in the box. The lokka has to be within the tolarence of that gauge.

Yeah tried that - it unlocks when spinning backwards but not forwards :( still haven`t had time to take photos or install the thrust washers - might have to be later in the week (dam project delays  )

No guage but it does mention tollerances that seam pretty fine - and something about machining the thrust washers to ensure correct gap. Might have to look at that a bit closer.
