What brand is that camera?

I hit a car doin 25k in my patrol yesterday and a camera would have been excellent to show what actually went down. Still in the insurance mans eyes my and the person that hit me's fault but would have showed the car that scampered after causing the whole thing.

does that have gps? does it record speed?
pity its only 720p in 16x9. 4x3 is a bit of a pain in a car as you want to capture the action on the sides not whats in the sky.

Are there any other recommendations?
Set up for accident recording or continuous recording?
What did it cost for the Blackvue DR400 in the link above?

i find continues recording good. the g meter is a bit sensitive and goes off on every bump unless it wound right down which makes accident recording a bit useless.
32 gig card does a surprising amount of recording tho i have the video set for 15 fps rather than 30 fps which doubles your recording time while still being fast enough to catch number plates.

price, email the company above. tho you can get them off ebay cheaper.
i paid a huge amount more than what 4wdbits is selling his one for.

just looking through i paid ~$500 for mine a little while ago.

in contrast my previous recording setup each camera was $150-200 and recorder $600-1000 and that was only analogue.

Specs error on our site, it does 1920 x 1080P (16x9), 1440 x 1080P (4x3), 1280 x 720P (16x9) and 848 x 480P (16x9), all at 30fps.
No gps or speed recording.
Web site specs will be fixed soon.

somehow i don't think some ones going to leave an iphone stuck to the windscreen all day every day. putting it on/off all the time is a major hassle.

Guys have a look at Gopro cameras. Can take up to 32gb cards recorded in 1080 hd and can have an external power supply.

I'm surprised insurance co's havent jumped at these things making them a way of lowering premiums.

Actually lots of companies would be interested in these too (our traffic dudes run them in their trucks).

nz insurance co's are a funny lot.
its still very much a "its only an accident" and everyone drives a stock standard car.
its up to you to get details of the offender so they can recover the costs, after they paid you less than what it costs to replace your vehicle.

Its funny when i was going to get truck insured,

they wouldnt insure it because it was bigger than a 2L, and had a turbo, but yet when it comes to the primera i was going to get they were fine?

considering the primera could do 180, and truck can only do 120????

When I was 18 ( way back in 1989 ) they didnt want to insure my 3b 40 series becasue the motor was too large, did insure my twin turbo charged corolla that could do 220 because it was only a 2litre

I do mobile video security for a living, whether it be bus and truck full dvr systems to reversing cameras and dashboard cameras. The Blackvues we buy through Darren at Viewtech and i highly recommend them. They are the highest quality drivecam on the market at the moment. They have gps (giving speed and position) as well as an acceleration for g-force. All of these are very useful when settling insurance claims.

Currently they have the ability to only use a 32gb card. When 64gb cards are more available they will send out an update with new firmware to allow it if they haven't already. This will be the same when 128gb cards which have just started to hit the market. The wifi version allows remote viewing over and Apple (iPad or iPhone) or Android device. These systems coupled with a cheap additional box allow for them to revert to a park-mode which switches off when voltage gets too low and records only on movement.

I love my GoPro but these are definitely more useful in my opinion.

are the wifi ones easy to get to do an auto sync to a pc in your home network when you pull up the driveway?

sorry can't help with wifi

but i see blackvue have a dual cam version out. so you can have a front and rear cam to catch the **** ramming you up the rear.
also it might make some cool 4x4 footage.

I'm with Sam.
I sold my BlackView DR400G-HD II (6 months old) for under half the retail price last week ($200). Some lucky guy in Dunedin brought it. I upgraded to the WiFi version of the same brand. The BlackVue dash cam are just awesome..
But hey, I guess using your smart phone or GoPro is better than not using one at all.

The BlackVue Wifi model is purely used to remotely view what's on the dash cam, in real time or playback mode.
I can't see the point in something like an auto sync if there's no event to view.

If there is an event you want to send to an insurance company? I'd say you'd be best to download the file directly to your PC physically by removing the card.

yeah unfortunately the Blackvues do not have the ability to auto download. They do write over themselves so you don't really have any issue with not getting footage as they generally (setting dependent) will last a day so all you need to do is sort it out when you get home

Im looking at one of these myself, did you get the 500 or go for the 550?

I wondering if the dual cam is really of any practical use?

not really. The rear camera is only good for looking at the driver and that is about it. Depends. The cheaper model does not have wifi but has a video out and the more expensive has wifi and no video out. We run the non wifi one for some of the trucks as they have another digital video recorder (dvr) that has 3 cameras conencted to it and we connect the Blackvue into it so it has more storage capacity.

I went for the 500.
Was going to keep the 400 for rear view but then thought nah. I don't think the rear view is that useful and I've been rear ended since having the dash cam. It was obvious who was in the wrong in that case. The traffic in front of us was stationary.

i would have thought it would pick out number plates at bit of a distance.
or is the lens to wide an angle for that ?

Set at the highest res they do pick out plates at a distance. But I don't see the point of recording what's behind you. Reminds me of the old, "Gumball Rally" movie quote. "What's behind me is of no concern to me".
