Windscreens

Post by wjw »

Hey guys,

Just had my windscreen shatter at 100km/h from a stone.... so I have two questions:

1. Do you know anyone who sells window film, ie the clear film you put on the inside of the windscreen so glass doesnt fly everywhere when the screen shatters.

2. What do you use as a temporary windscreen?

Thanks,

Bill

To laugh or not to laugh , that is the question.
Ok answer 1. It is illegal to put film (tint) on your windscreen.

Answer 2. The question begs what car were you driving? As of 1985 all windscreens were laminated. Unless you drive an imported car.

So unless you got a screen fitted in some backyard you will only get a banded laminated windscreen. If you don't you can sue the crap out of the company. I've been in the windscreen game for ten years so I'm quite interested as to how it happened. 8O

To laugh, well I did, it's happened to me before, so I was quite calm when my windscreen shattered.

1. The film I'm talking about is clear, without a tint. It's legal in the UK... but here well you'd have to answer that ;)

2. My car is a 1986 model Datsun/Nissan so it is possible it was imported, would have to check the docs. Also the Rubbers had silicon sealant all over them so I guess it could have been replaced a while ago, but looks like a bodge to me. As far as comeback... well I dont know who the manufacturer is as I've never checked and now the glass is in a million pieces I'll never know... shame that I mighta got some money back... ahh well insurance is going to pay ....

Basically a stone came off a car on the other side of the road... so estimated speed of the stone would be about 200km/h as I was doing 100ish and my guess is he was too... stone hit about 100mm in from each side in the top right corner, just missing my head. Punctured a hole straight through the glass, which then proceeded to shatter. first it went like all safety glass does and creaked and groaned as the cracks spread through, which only took a few seconds. The center all the way accross split into large sections, while the rest turned into the glass pieces you usually get. Dont know how fast I was going at this point as I had my foot firmly planted on the brake with my head down... then the whole thing blew in... well it would have just fallen in if I was going slower....

I was really lucky there was no other traffic about and that I didnt panic... but saying that I want to put film on so it doesnt happen again.... will ask the windscreen guy about it too when he comes to out the new one in on Tuesday.

It was definatly a toughened safety glass. This is the reason they were banned. More injurys accured due to the glass shattering than the acutual accident. You are right about the speed of the rock which is adiquate to that of a bullet so it is understanding that the screen shattered. Make sure that the new one is a banded laminated screen . You will notice that the screen suffers chips easier but with a large impact the force will spread out and the screen will flex but it wont shatter or cave in.
Or you could just try and dodge the rocks

I resent that - I haven't been near any 86 Nissan/Datsuns...

My lawyers will be talking to your lawyers......

there is no way the stone could be doing 200km/h 8O

basically the stone would have been doing less than 100km/h and you DROVE into it at 100km/h.

I am only working on behalf of the stones lawyers: to intimate that the stone was exceeding the speed limit is libelous to say the least

i assume that the replacement screen will be laminated so you should be able to drive easy (as opposed to resting easy!!!)

cheers

PS: My new screen looks sooo clean.... and its laminated... Went up the snow farm 3 times this week, covered it in mud and with one wash of the wipers its clean with no streaks.... I'm sure that wont last tho ....
