Leaky Safari Ball swivel Joint

Post by drtylilman »

Hi all,

I think I've stuffed an oil seal in the front left ball joint, dripping diff oil all over my driveway

Anyone know where the cheapest place is to get a ball joint kit for an 89 Safari? I also need to do the bearings.

You mean the swivel joint??

If you have oil leaking from there, your inner axle seals are leaking. In side the swivel joint is dry, unless you have filled them with greese like some of us do.

Best get the phone book out and do some ringing around for the Swivel Housing seal kit. The axle seals will be available from any place that sells oil seals, they're nothing special. Catch is that you will probably have tp pull them out and get them matched up.

The swivel housing seals are a specialised part, consisting of a rubber seal, a hard plastic rind and a steel keeper ring, so more than likely only available from Nissan

Give NZ Bus And Truck in Auckland a call and ask for a "SH13" these are swivel hub rebuild kits which will give you all the seals and gaskets you need to rebuild both sides.... they're a little pricy though.

You don't nessacerilly need a swivel kit. The seals aren't made to retain oil
The diffs can bend especially if jumping and this causes oil leaks.
If your low on cash just do the axle seal and clean and regrease the swival housing

:( I did some calling around and lets just say I've seen whole cars sell for less.

I'm also going to have to get a new brake hose too now. That's started leaking as well :(

On the up side, I haven't broken anything else.
