EGT gauge readings..

Hi,

Egt gauge is all in and working. Just a quick question.. what readings should i be getting when driving :?:

going 50ks up a hill i get to 550, and up a big hill going 80-100 i get up to 600-700, not even flooring it (ie in overdrive) ?? so I ease off the pedal and let them go down.

Do these readings seem about right? What reading do you other guys get.

Cheers. 1kz engine btw

They look a little high. What boost are you running? If you are running fairly low boost I would up it a bit to bring temps down.
I assume probe is read pre turbo. 700 deg would be max temp with foot flat up hill, towing heavy load. You need to bring them down.

I havent got a boost gauge or anything yet, but getting round to it. Yes probe is pre-turbo. Could there be any other reasons?

Noob question, but how do you increase boost?

Is the tip of the probe in the middle of the exhaust stream.

It is in there quite far, a good couple of centermeters. Should I pull it out a bit?

put a screw driver etc in till it hits the other side. measure the depth and half it to get the centre. adjust probe to suit.

if its not in enough it won't read high, it will read low.
i have mine in the egr port and with the normal length sender it was a bit short and read 100c lower.

Thanks guys. Will double check the probe tomorrow.

I'm pulling 33s, and have a 3inch dump pipe etc on as well.

Did you do it all yourself? Need to do one on mine! 8) Not too hard? Would you mind quickly writing what's entailed in doing an EGT gauge install?

PS in one of my threads somewhere someone posted up a whole lot of info on what EGT's 1KZ Surf's should be getting and where the danger points are!

mine is sitting around 250-300 crusing at 100kph 2wd surf 20 inch mags low profile tyres so very little drag, towing cruises at 450-500 with 3ton on behind and up to 650 feeding it uphill. mine is manual pumped 20 psi intercooled i feel this is otimum for this motor hope this helps. DONT GO OVER 700deg!!!!!!!!!

Okay. Yeah my temps seem to high, so It is now a question of what needs to be done to get the egts down.

I gather that increasing boost will bring them down.
Anything else that could be contributing to high egts?

Bronx, I got some one to do it for because I didn't have the tools required. It's pretty straight forward. We just removed the heat shield etc and drilled and tapped the hole.

That looks about right for a std engine....As said stay under 700....
Push the boost up with a boost tap to just under 14 psi or until the boost cut comes on... That will make some difference..
Also inter-cooler helps ...
One thing yours could be suffering from is a gunked up intake manifold from EGR fumes mixing with oil vapours...
Oh and remove the EGR...

I see, doesn't the manifold have to come off though? Otherwise wouldn't drilling and tapping with it on leave filings etc in there that will all go through the turbo and possibly mess wheels and seals etc up?

Thanks kbush. Im getting a manual boost controller and boost gauge soon. I'm not sure what boost controller i need though, will this one be allgood (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =554336014).

As with cleaning out intake manifold, im not sure how to do that, is a big/hard job? could i do it with simple tools? Also don't know how to remove EGR.

Bronx I did it with the manifold still on, and it seems most of the other guys on here did to. Just keep the drill bit and the tap greased up so swarf doesnt fall in.

That boost tap will work...
Cleaning intake is pretty simple...Remove inlet manifold...Nothing too hard just nuts and bolts...
Fuel system is not disturbed....
Start picking out the gunk
There are heaps of threads on here re the 1KZTE engine... Search is your friend.

Okay, so I pushed boost up to about 13.5psi, and don't see much difference in egts. It turns out I got the definition of 'dump pipe' wrong  , what I actually have is a 3in exhaust from the the dump pipe.. I'm getting pretty annoyed at the high egt readings, so anyone know who does a good deal on 1kz dump pipes :?:

Cheers.

Got a D1NZ guy in Aucks who can do them for about $350-400 depending on how many you buy.

Oh yeah thanks, whats the turnover time for one? How do I go about organising one?

There's a drift guy on here making them. He's called Slydho

The EGT reading you are getting are quite normal on a lot of trucks.

To produce heat you need fuel so perhaps someone has increased the fuel at the pump to get extra power.

There is also the possibility the timing may be out by a tooth on the timing belt if it has been replaced.

Fitting an intercooler will definitely reduce the EGT reading. Mine was brought down by about 100C when the intercooler was fitted

Cheers Richard

Is there any bolt on intercooler kit for a Surf? I haven't been able to find one and can't believe there isn't one!

Would it help if more air was coming in the intake? It looks like the air intake is very restrictive in the surf, with not much air coming in?

Of course it would. Yes the standard intake is very restrictive - it's TINY! Get a snorkel

I get about:
250-300 around town
400-500 @ 100k's
500 towing
500-600 up big hills
Never over 700, although I could push it over 700 if I wanted too...

Thats on a stock prado 1kz with no intercooler. Will be looking to intercoolers though...

Whats a good way to increase air flow to the intake without getting a snorkel, untill i get one? A pod filter?

As long as the pod filter was in the right place (i.e. not starved of air by being blocked by other stuff or not pulling nothing but hot air) I can't imagine it being any worse than what is already in there.

I was very very surprised when we were putting my snorkel on at how miniscule the standard intake is before the filter box!

Yeah, that could be a problem, the engine bay gets pretty hot, so might just pull in hot air :( . Could I just modify the existing intake and open it up a bit, like try to channel more air into the air box by cutting a hole into the air box and channeling a tube somewhere to reach cool air??? Suggestions?

Yea as long as it was all sealed and the right material I don't see that being a prob. But for the amount of time you'd spend oing that it'd be better doing the snorkel. They're only about $200 and are easy to put in, just takes a couple hours that's the only thing.
