The trail didn't win the trip home did

Post by De-Ranged »

Got the chance to give the new toy err... work wagon a play :D an 82 2L Hilux ute, that happens to be painted yellow!
Went to a local farm forestry field day .... and due to a lack of 4 wheelers I got too take the new/old wagon for a run, its first 4WD run!

After the pre-walk around talk, everyone is sorting out rides. When we came up short I offered to take the lux round 8) and yes I was thinking about having a bit of a play, the property owner warns me that its pretty slippery and I hear from his wife that its bad enough in a fourwheeler, hmmm... sounds like a bit of a challange.
Let some air out of the tires, throw all the rubbish off the back and away we go, last in the line. As we leave I notice a sign out on the road "4WD Instruction" hmmm... this could be embarising
After a couple of stops to look at some impressive wind damage we start to head up into the farm on some steep'ish clay tracks, all goes well till it gets wet and we stop going forward. Back up till the last corner, looking up ahead is the owner/instructor waiting and watching, yay an audiance. 2nd gear lowbox & gun it, 3rd gear still gunning it, the old girl slows down as the tires spin up, start spinning the wheel from left to right too make the most of the front wheels while keeping an eye on the edge of the track as we get closer to the top the grin gets bigger and bigger... and we roll out the top 8)
An hour or so later we make the top of the farm and start down the back, a few muddy tracks later I notice the owner stop at the crest of a ridge and slowly roll over, stopping at the same spot I give him a head start ... just in case, then just as I'm about to go I notice him start to slid hmmm a bit more of a gap I think, its at this stage my passangers abandon ship  seat belt on, low low and away we go, avioding the owners tracks where he'd slid the grass off, get almost through when the back starts to slid out, gun the throttle to get the wheels rolling again and genttly back off again, the grin is back 8) a bit further and back onto dry ground again and away we go
The next bit of fun was a steep switch back track that ran down into a shaded wet gully, I knew it was going to be fun when the owner slides to a stop round the first bend and all his passangers bail! 8O its got to be bad when people don't have any faith in a 4WD instructor... soon he's out of site and its my time, with plenty of suggestions from the spectators I idle up to the first corner, putting the inside wheels up on the bank I head round without any problems, keeping the up hill wheels on the bank I make it too the first switch back, stearing into the corner the front slides straight ... a quick grab of the hand brake slides the back off the bank and lines me up on the next straight. Yea you guessed it the grin is back 8)
Stop and watch the owner crawl through the next corner and half way down the next straight, then he slides out onto a bit of a flat. My turn :D I make it down to the same piont and then she takes off, I gun it to try and get the wheels rolling again but she's moving to fast, just hang tight till it stops, last bit a 30m slide down to a creek with a splash! and up the other side to lunch at a hut
After lunch it was time to head back down to the creek and out, being the last in ment I had no room to turn around so i had to back down :? showing a total lack of class I dug holes and draged the bull bars into the bank all the way to the bottom  Then it was it was a nice cruise though a few fords (some the fourwheelers struggled on) Till the last play of the day, after a stop for a talk, the owner wanders over to have a look over a bit of a bank (about a 10m drop!) then slowly idils up and over 8) this is a bit of me so I line up (with my business partner complaining"You don't have to show off, theres no need to play games ....") and as usual my passangers bailed  lined up low low thumbs out of the wheel (it was a bit rough) not that I could see much over the bonnet  and away we go, a couple of bounces and the old girl slid right out the bottom 8) accross a few paddics and out to the road, rather impressed with my new $2000 ute  said our goodbyes and headed home, this is where the fun started  The old girl had picked up a bit of a top end rattle, well that got worse, especially under load then there was a bit of a petrol smell (thought it might be a leaking chainsaw on the back...) then the old girl started to drop a cylinder under load! Managed to slowly nurse her home
The damage -
-the tappets on cylinders 1&4 had tightented don't ask how!
-An old repair on the fuel tank had nocked loose... it had been done with bog only just descovered that one
-The battery had broken loose and fallen onto the fuel line
-And a few more oil leaks

8) Yea I did have a bit of fun

Problem is the old girl's a work truck and its been out of action since, only just sorted the fuel tank in the weekend .... I had no idea how hard it was to sorce a large soldering iron to solder a patch, now the paints dried its all go :? well as soon as I put the tank back in

with all the work I've done under the bonnet, still can't work out why the tappits tightened ??? but its got me looking at a supra upgrade  and another project starts

Good stuff, turf the lux boat anchor.
I can't speak highly enough about the celica/supra conversion.
I love mine (not sure if this is natural  ) Its a very easy conversion, the only thing that I found to be time comsuming was the wiring, it took about 10 hours but I was extremely through and haven't had a single fault.
There is a few of us on this website who have done it ( myself, Suprasurf, Supralux) to name a few. Surely between the three of us we can help you iron out any bugs.
Get into it, help is there if you need it.

Cheers
Thomas

PS I soldered a petrol tank on an old Ford Laser that I had, had nothing but problems. A small lump of solder must have dropped into the ank and kept blocking the fuel lines. Put a new tank in the bl :!: :!: dy thing them put it on its roof 4 days later.

Yip far too much, hunt around you'll get one much cheaper than that. The 82 - 84 celicas/supras appear to have come off the factory floor with rust, so the chances of getting one under $1000 dereged with a shit load of rust and a good motor is very likely.
But then again it depends on how much you want to over capitalise an old lux.
I personally like to keep it cheap, helps me to contain the tears when its on its side. 8O
This one you've found, sure its not a 3ltr t/turbo? The 2.8ltr 5m motors weren't turboed. :?:

Pass I don't know enough about the motors to tell them apart .... but it is sporting a twin turbo ....

I like your idea of cheaper is better :D I'll throw an add in the local trader and try my luck, is there anything I should look out for on these motors??

Nah there is nothing out of the ordinary to watch for.
All I did was took it for a drive (bit dodgy with no number plates etc, but I got away with it so who cares 8) )Checked vapours coming out of the oil filler cap (rings worn?) no strange noises, everything checked out, handed over the money into very eager young hands, see ya later..... :D
40000km and one water pump later it still pulls 7500rpm.
Celica/Supra came out with...
1g-eu Sohc Fuel inj 6cyl 2000cc
1g-geu dohc " " " "
5m-geu dohc " " " 2800cc
7m-gt?eu dohc " " " 3000cc T/turbo
There was also a 2ltr t/turbo, unsure of the numbers
There were more engines but its getting late and I should be in bed. :?
However if its got a 5spd manual you'll be right, bellhousing bolts onto the lux box.

Happy hunting
