Ok Guys and Gals....
I am sure this has been touched on may times in various threads, god knows I have searched...
So I am after real experiences and part numbers.
Its hard trying to work it out when someone says the turbo from a Subaru or Mitsi...
So I have a 1KZ with a manual pump... Looking at a suitable turbo that will still be efficient boosting at 20 psi.....And come on low in the rev range....

been told by a knowlagable person, when turbo'ing a diesel, you want a turbo of about half the size worth of a petrol engine.

i.e a 3.2 would do well with a trubo off a 1.6..

Simple reason being that the rev range in an oil burner is about half that of a petrol, pretty crude measurement but gets you in the ball park.

I have often wondered what a turbo of a BT50/Ranger would be like. Veriable vane would make it happier down low with enough up top. And with being off the same size engine its prob not too far away. What your getting is 15 years of turbo development!

i have only worked with tds as they are readily avalible and work well for what i've used them for.
As for part numbers can't help there as i use the vechile codes.
for what your wanting a you should be looking at a small wheel 16g tdo5 off either a mitsi or subaru. Either of these turbos will work as they both produce good smooth power. and are reliable units. Both are the same turbo just different flange shapes.
Brand new they are up round the 1k mark but all i do is get second hand ones and put a rebuild kit through them. At the boost you want to run it would need the superback kit put in. Stops them from flexing and makes them last waaayyyy longer. kits on e-bay are only $150 to the door.
Manifold desgin will play a bit in spool up speed to so do some research on that as well.
Without geting one esp made for what you want, you'll have to experiment and compromise.
Either that or you get a garrett or the likes.
Jammysammy runs a tdo5 on his surf and reckons its made a big difference.

something like this would be ok
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 845090.htm

Vairable vanes would work but they work with the fuel computer and afaik they are electronically controlled. Would be cool to see someone get one going on a different truck. Also "modern" ball bearing turbos don't like the dirty oil older diesels have.

Hi guys,

Yeah I run a tdo5h with a 16g compressor wheel. There is a wee but of lag but not much. I haven't had problems with 4wding with it. It has certainly made it more powerful. I will try and get a video today of it boosting if you want.

variable vanes can be made to work. easiest is one that has a vacuum actuator on it (eg patrol ZD30). you can either run a manual boost system or even just a boost actuator.
they are just a little harder to set up.

the main reason they are normally computer controlled is because the variable turbo is a major part of the egr system.

I think there is some real gains to be had with variable. Finding 1 at the right price may be the hard bit though.....

i will get onto it this evening. I looked into variable vane turbos and decided against it. One because of cost and 2 to get a good secondhand one of newer design is hard. A lot of earlier ones had problems with the adjustable vanes packing a sad and then you were up for a rebuild in the $1000s. I like how mine goes so i will leave it :D
