Offroad-Express

Hi out there, have got a 2001 Pajero 3.5 petrol and am looking to get an after market ECU to put up HP,NM and get better fuel consumption. Is it worth it and if so any one know a good installer? Haven't gone 4X4ing in it yet but would like to go on an easy run to see how it goes. PS wife's truck so no dents yet LOL.

Cost to result ratio would make it pretty pointless I would think, aftermarket computer systems/tuning costs are pretty expensive and you probably wouldn't get much more out of it. Be better off to fit extractors and a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust system, would make it sound better too.

I have a mate with a LWB Pajero - 2.5L D ( earlier than yours) running on good A/T tyres. I'm impressed where he gets with it. Was at Gt Exibition Bay last week- he got up and over a 4m sand bank that my Safari 4.2L petrol bottomed on.
Your model has the plastic bumpers & gives the impression of being lower ground clearance than the earlier models. On the same trip last week there was 1 of those models. It was on A/T carrying 4 adults. The rear plastic bumper did get too lower - half of it got ripped off when the rear bottomed- a poor exit angle.
I would spend your money on either raising the ground clearance or improving the entrance and exit angle of the vehicile - fitting after market steel or alloy bumpers and perhap HD shocks. That way you will protect the body work abit - keeps the wife happy = that means more 4wding.

Welcome to the forum,
Firstly get a decent set of rubber on it and learn to drive it. One of the biggest issues I had 13 years ago when I started 4 wheeling after 22 years of motorsport was learning to lift my foot off the throttle.

Once I had learnt this (some say I still haven't) was just where I could actaully drive to. It dosen't matter how much HP or NM you have, if it cant get to the ground you may as well not have it. (Also the better the tyres the less need for a winch)

As others have said, go along to a 4x4 meeting, meet the folks, age is imaterial, some of the newer members maybe more on the game than the older ones, you have to work that out for yourself, and talk to them all. You will find the answers that you want
