KZJ78 on 80 series coils

Post by kbushnz »

Hi All
Well I have finally scored a set of 80 series coils, supposedly having done 100k clicks..
I am using the fronts in the rear of the playdoh.
I have been running the OME851 which are a med duty 80 series fronts...But have found them too stiff...(220lbin) It feels a bit tippy and have been told it looks like its trying to cock a leg on the open rd in slow corners...
This avo I have thrown one of the std 80 coils in the drivers side...
At this stage its only sits a few mm shorter than the OME ones with the weight on...
Gunna take it outside Friday and drive it up some small ramps to see how it flex's compared to the other side....
Will throw up some photo's later....
Then throw in the other.....

My springs are supposed to be 195 lb, real soft , awesome off road when empty, not so good when loaded up.
Very quick to bottom out when off road with the camping gear loaded.

It'll be interesting to see the difference with your 80 series springs.
I have a set of front ones here I should try out.

Settle settle.... will throw some up Friday Avo....

And yes the 80 series fronts are the same mount sizes for the playdoh rear.....

The OME851's gave me a 170mm gap from the axle to the bump stops.
The std 80's look like they will give about 160 ish....
At the moment the gas tank is almost empty but its loaded with all my play gear...

The factory 80 series spring rate seems to be about 170 lb...
The OME851's are 220 lb....
The factory spring rate for the playdoh is supposed to be about 170 also....
I tried some which were about 150 lb rate... but were too short with the weight...
However took it into Woodhill for a play and it felt great......and climbed over stuff like a spider.....But was a bit wobbly on the road...

OK some more info for those that like numbers..
OME851 coils
Free height 470mm
Compressed height 340mm
bumpstop clearance 165mm

Std 80 series
Free height 500mm
Compressed height 320mm
bumpstop clearance 145mm

Give or take a few mm..
On near empty tank but fully loaded with recovery gear.
The fronts had sagged a little and I had a bout a 2 inch difference between front and back for height... Now its sits a little lower in the rear (what I wanted) and when gassed up will sit a little flatter...
I have a set of front springs with a softer rate.. will throw then in after a play in Woodhill....

It used to match the rear OME....220lb but has sagged a bit over the years....
If I knew the factory heights I could say what lift it is.....
At a guess 3 to 4 inch....

If you get a set of springs out of a 1990 80 series they are taller than other year 80 series trucks. I picked up a couple of sets from the wreckers, they are 525mm tall.
