sneaky self recovery

Lately I've been doing a bit of offroading solo and seeing as I don't have a winch yet I've just been driving around in 2wd, then if I get into trouble I just get out, lock the hubs, get back in, put it in 4wd and drive out. It's been working really well so far.

But.......I quite often end up in water, so I've been climbing out on to the bonnet, leaning over the side, locking the hubs, then back into the truck dukes of hazard style.

My question is: Would it be adviseable to lock my hubs up at the start of the trail and drive around in two wheel drive, then when I get in to trouble I can just put it in 4wd from inside the vehicle?

Or does this put stresses on the hub locking mechanism? i.e. with the hubs locked the wheels are turning the diff and front driveshaft instead of all that rotational mass being turned by the engine/gearbox/transfer case.

Laugh at will, I really have no idea.

my g wagen has a part time 4wd system but i don't have locking hubs at all

from my understanding locking hubs were more an economy thing to prevent wear and tear on the driveline and also to lower fuel consumption

Merc is quite right. it takes fuel to drive all that stuff to no good use, ie, hubs in, but not being driven.

Its yr best bet if you MUST go alone.

Invest in a hand winch and some flat strops, a tree protector, take a spade. with care tec, you should be ok for easy stuff.

be prepared for a LOOOOONG walk to get help!!! also, be prepared to get laughed at by all and sundry for trapping yourself somewheres all alone!!!

If ya wanna go out, post it on the forum, I'm sure a few might want to come along, just like Elmo.

Ive got a winch but would rather still go out with at least one other vehicle, better in numbers I always say.

When out 4wding it wont make any difference to fuel economy at all with them locked in. The make the difference on the open road at 100km/hr.

also youll probably end up using more fuel in 2wd anyway as you have to push the vehicle harder to get it through places where it would normally just idle through in 4wd, but youll definitly be having more fun in 2wd though with the heavy foot.

Most real work trucks are left with there hub locked in .
Early toyota's did not have freewheel hubs. and if you left them locked ,it would save your hands from getting wet. or a long walk home.

As said about, the hubs are only unlockable to help save fuel, and general wear and tear. If I were you, Id have them locked in when out by yourself. And just select 4wd from inside. having them locked in just means your half shafts are turning, with diff head and front drive shaft. No biggie, just saves getting wet, thats all.

MATE!!!!! (some bloody mate!!))

I been giving that a helluva lot of thought.
Ssyangyong was made by Daewoo for some years, very very popular in the UK for the last ten leven years. there are plenty engines there.

Dont limit yourself to just Korando donks, Musso have the same pwrplant.
the Rexton is a 2.7 5 potter, common rail crittur, very strong, dunno about torque figgers tho.

I gotta mate in pongoland, want me to ask him to research?
also heaps of em in Austraya, know any body there?

Hey guys, well fuel consumption isn't my main concern.
also youll probably end up using more fuel in 2wd anyway as you have to push the vehicle harder to get it through places

bang on with that one mike :D
take a spade

yup I've been meaning to put that in the truck, would've come in very handy today.
Mullet give me a yell anytime ya wanna go out, IM usually keen ay.

thanks for the offer elmo, I might take you up on that sometime. I'm sure the mate I took out 4wding today would've liked another truck to pull us out.
If ya wanna go out, post it on the forum, I'm sure a few might want to come along

yeh that is a good idea.....But. I'm a complete 4wdn newbie, not a trip leader, plus I don't know about you guys but I do a fair bit of impromptu 4wdn,.......driving home.......hmmm, river.......don't mind if i do.
Ive got a winch but would rather still go out with at least one other vehicle, better in numbers I always say

Yep that's a good idea and if I plan a daytrip I do normally do that, but again it comes back to my love of that freedom 4wdn gives you. town...river....tarmac.....river......mud.....home :D
If I were you, Id have them locked in when out by yourself. And just select 4wd from inside.

this definetly would have saved a brown trouser moment today.

Thanks for all the advice guys and from now on I will be locking the hubs at the start of the trail.

I have learned aaallot today.

I really need lockers, 33's, hand winch, radio, gps...etc. etc. etc.

The more capable the truck is the less likely I am to get stuck when wheeling solo.

Use your high lift as an emergency winch http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=881, less heavy stuff to carry around.
