TD27 Intercooler options

Post by Mckev »

Hey guys, I've been scouring for an intercooler to chuck in my Terrano. I been ringing around wreckers for a Mistral one, so I can pretty much bolt it in but they aren't cheap ($400). For that price would I be better off getting a cheaper top mount off an old Subaru or something? Or possibly a bighorn?

Any other ideas appreciated, cheers!

Its been covered here a lot... some have done Subaru water-to-air, some have done the Isuzu...

Paid $180 for mine 2 years ago
You think another one is cheap but by the time you pay for silicone bends and clamps, mandrill bends, mounting brackets and a body lift to make room for said inter cooler it almost equals out
Less bends, short hose runs and good heat soak make for less lag and more efficient cooling 8) and have never had a hose blow off on the tracks.

Yep that install is the ideal solution IMHO, clean, factory, simple.

Intercooler is quite low on my priority list as I'm a single digit boost guy at the moment, good thing to have for other reasons too though

good advice there, what ever you decide on inter cooler wise, the most expensive part is always the fitting and mounting up.

I did have a big look through the search results, not many results for where people actually got their intercooler from.

The main reason I did want the Mistral one is so I could get all the mounting brackets etc.

I thought about water to air, but not sure if I have enough room for the heat exchanger.

On the other hand if I get a dirt cheap one then I can spend more making it fit..

ive got a water to air one, paid 70 all up for the cooler, heat exchanger, and pump.

the radiator part fits fine infront of aircon radiator, all you need to get done is modify the bracket that goes over the front, also holds it in better.

the water to air ones are abit better if your offroading all the time, as the radiator doesnt get any heatsoak, and its not relying on air being pushed through a scoop. (unless you get an electric fan like silbain)

the actual intercooler sits quite nice above the turbo, with only one bend needing to be cut and turned, and a flange made up for turbo.

also this way there is no cutting of the bonnet and still looks factory.

Do you have any pics lying around? It looks like a pretty tight fit, especially with where the grill is mounted to the front, and also where the bonnet latch is located? If it didn't get so hot in Kaikoura during summer I'd think about ripping out the air con haha.

I still have to finish it, its been going on for a while.

but i basicly cut through the support brace, and then made a new one from 3mm tounge steel, bent to shape.

works quite well, as down the bottom all i need to do to make a brace, is weld some flat steel under where the radiator sits on whats left of the old support brace.

i also had to cut off one of the grill mounting bits, and you may or may not need to cut a little bit off the bumper.. i allready had to make it sit nice with some other stuff i did (body lift, etc, etc, etc)

Hey thanks for that, I'll keep that option in mind. May be easier hacking that open rather than hacking open my bonnet haha.

Anyone else have any intercooler options for me? All info is greatly appreciated!
