Running on AvGas

Post by Nachoooo »

Hi there, a friend has access to avgas, octane 100 leaded etc, just wondering what adjustments would need to be made to the engine? It's a 1.6 Lada motor, standard carbs etc. And would the engine be able to handle the difference in burn of the fuel?

Cheers

Should probably be fine to run as is in your old lada motor, though I wouldn't try it in anything modern as the lead will hurt things like oxygen sensors and catalytic converters. You should be able to run more ignition advance with the high octane rating.

It should love it... And yep, a slight advance on you ignition will make it run a bit sweeter.

Used to run an old mini on it, and never actually adjusted the ignition.. Lawn mower loved it too.

yep. more advance to make use of the potential due to the higher octane etc. It should run fine on it in stock tune.
If injected the oxy sensors wont last quite as long but some dont ever seem to die, and yeah catylic converters have a meltdown on the shit.

best smell ever
grey pipe.
wow.

if you're getting the samples for free that they haveto decant off bulktanks to make sure there's no water in there then I'm immensely jealous. the only thing better than avgas is free avgas.

If it's jeta1 then I doubt the old lada will love it. I had a joker drop a truck off to me about a month ago that was running his old leyland truck on 'contaminated' jet a1 with some oil for lubrication of the pump gear etc. pretty choice smell!

i ran jetA1 in my terrano a little while back, got what was left of the batch they test.

also use to run a 1990 ford telstar on avgas and boy did it run good on it lol.

Ive heard jet A1 is good for clearing out the injectors etc on a diesel? dont know how true that is but it didnt seem to do any damage to the truck. it wa about 1/3 mix jet to diesel.

Since someone mentioned JetA1, be careful if its been sumped or drained from an A/C. Some times the airlines will put a fungicidal chemical in the fuel to kill off any bugs... that chemical is extremely dangerous even when mixed with the fuel...and could harm you.....I think also the exhaust fumes are also more toxic.

When i had my racing license (go-karting) I used to buy my AV gas from Canterbury Helicopters on Memorial Ave just before the Airport. We used it for my bros off road buggy. Though you needed a racing license to purchase it. That stuff is 120 Octane and fresh as, not like the stuff anyone can buy on Main North Rd after the Old Waimak bridge. That stuff is old AV gas that would barely be close to 100 octane anyway, but it does have the lead in it.
The smell of it burnt is like ethanol and man the buggy would fly on it!!
I thought of running a mix in the Holden. All I had to do was change the O2 sensors to racing ones, but their price was right out there.
