1989 Hilux- Oil/Filter Servicing

Post by boblinski »

Hey guys, just wondering.. I have recently purchased a Toyota Hilux 1989.. 2wd column shift single cab.

It has done 270,000km.

I always figured to change oil and filter every 10,000-12,500 kms.. but someone I was talking to mentioned I need to change the oil every 5,000 and the filter every 10,000.

Whats the story?

Thanks!

Given the price of oil and filters compared to the cost of an engine I do my oil and filter every 5,000km in my 1989 hilux 3l (2.8 litre non turbo diesel) probably overkill on my part.

My father in law (owned a number of hilux's over the years) told me they will run with next to no oil, but get them hot and they die, so radiator flush, new thermostat (old one was stuck open), water pump (and timing chain) when I bought it and I make sure I keep and eye on the temp gauge, it has never got to 1/2, even when loaded and towing a trailer, and yes I know the temp gauge is not overly sensitive so I would let it cool down if it ever got to 1/2
