A mate and I own a series 1. It has series two diffs and axles with steering arms on the top of the swivel hub and with front brakes that have two slave cylinders.

The when you stomp on the brakes it dives to the right and the bum steps out. From what I can tell front right and back left are dominant which causes this.

We had to replace the left swivel housing because the studs were flogged out and my mate had a spare series 2a complwte front diff. Turns out they changed them a bit with the 2a but we managed to make the swivel housing work.

Front left brakes were buggeres so we thought we would see if the 2a brakes were better put it all together and its a little better but still steps out. Am looking to rebuild wirh all new pads and need to decide which brakes to go with.

Looong story short which brakes are better series 2 with 2 slaves or series 2a with one slave.

Also any tricks to setting up the brakes?

The series 2 brakes which have double wheel cylinders, one top & one bottom, are from the LWB.

They are ment to be better than the single wheel cylinder version. A SWB S2 has the same single wheel cylinder setup front and rear.

May as well stay with the two cylinder version on the front.

If all four wheels aren't adjusted evenly, you get that diving off to the left or right and some lock up before others etc.

Just make sure you get the springs in the right place (I managed to screw it up on my old S2 ), put the wheel on & spin, adjust up the shoes via the square nut until shoes drag slightly.

Might be worth checking adjustment before you start overhauling

Yea had a good go at adjusting them the pads are worn enough that at full adjustment they don't drag so think it's time for new pads. Series 2 LWB brakes it is!

We had the same problem with a series 2A LWB front end. Turned out to be one of the flexible rubber brake hoses was stuffed and the inner tube had collapsed. Fitted new hoses to the front and adjusted the shoes properly and problem was solved. Also check to make sure none of the pistons in the slave cylinders are frozen. Some early LWB backing plates also have a manual adjuster bolt that sets the angle of the brake shoes so they sit square to the brake drum. On later model backing plates the steel has been pressed to preset the angle of the shoes.
