G13BA modifications

Has anyone ever done any modifications to a G13BA 1298cc 8v SOHC Carb engine for more power?

I would like to coax a little bit more power of of my Samurai to make it a bit better on road. I have though about a g16 transplant but not sure if it is worth the work with wiring for a 16v, and the 8v engines seem to be a rare as rocking horse ....... If I went for 1 g16a/b I would have to factor in a rebuild because I can bring myself to put a high kms engine in my 100,000kms body.

So I though is there anything I can do to my existing G13BA? Camshaft perhaps? where would I find such thing?

Freeflow exhaust and free flowing airfilter.

Maybe some head work (port and polish)

I had heard that the 1600 8V head would bolt onto the 1300 block and as it has bigger valves would flow better and give better torque, but I am not 100% on whether its true for all the 1300 blocks. It also used the same manifolds so no worries there (the 16V one had a different shaped exhaust ports from memory).

When I had my sj413 the exhaust (2 inch freeflow all the way) and air filter combo made it rev out quicker but the drone from the exhaust on long trips was a bit of a pain.

That was my modification to a g13ba. Its not hard. The wiring is actually pretty easy, just gotta break it down nice and simple. I wouldnt bother with a 1600 carby motor, not that much gain over the g13 for the amount of effort. The transplant is simple if you use BenT's kit. Dont worry about high kms either, just do the cambelt and waterpump when you put it in. My samurai has 130000kms on it and the g16 has 290,000kms, it still doesnt smoke, use oil or water and it quite happily sits on the rev limiter.

I fitted a set of extractors and free flow exhaust to my G13BA not to long ago, it made a world of difference over the old standard cast manifold and pea shooter exhaust. Was finding I had to do a lot of feathering the clutch on take off with the old exhaust but all that is gone now and you can rev the nuts off it.
Also half way through building a manifold to fit a set of suzuki quad carbs from a GSXR - Should be interesting, could go either way, some guys report worthwhile gains, others say it was the worst thing they ever did - I guess it all depends on the set up and tunning/balancing of the carbs.

Good to hear that exhaust is working well for you, it'll be cool if you get the quad carb setup sorted too, it should scream with that setup! :mrgreen:

I was in the same boat a while back but with a stuffed g13 and stuck for options, now I have a g16 sitting on a friends garage floor awaiting attention.
Here's some ideas - try outers pirate an auszooks to get a better idea

-exhaust, carb, pistions (unless your late model), cam in what you have in that order.
-injected g13, not the later m series
-hunt down a 1600 block to fit with your stuff
-g16 in some version, with patience something will appear somewhere

Trans gears will give you back some "get up and go" if you have slightly bigger rubber, I want them - they must have been borderline to start with - I can do 85k (90) on the speedo in low FFS

Some good things to think about here!

I am watching a thread over at auszookers about rejetting the stock carb, waiting to see the outcome of that, but am thinking about it.

Seems like extractors will be the next thing on the list.

I did it to mine, swapped the secondary jet into the primary and fitted a 140 into the secondary. I fitted a K&N filter as well which also improved power but I was not impressed to find dust in the carby so I wouldn't recommend fitting one of those. It wasn't as good as fitting the 1600 but it was a little bit better. Good thing about doing the 8V 1600 conversion is that you can get your extractors and exhaust done now and it will bolt straight onto the 8V 1600 if you want a bit more power, the 16V's have a different bolt pattern.
