cruiser locked diff

ok, so ive got a bj45 diff here, its an open diff, and i need it 100% locked.
i wanna weld the spider gears up, but i wanna know if it can actually be done on these and still be able to take the axles back out.
as from what ive found, is i take the pin retaining bolt out, then the pin, pull the small spider gears and thrust washers out,push the axle in/push the large spider gears back so i can drop the axle clips off the axle..then pull the axle out.
so if i weld up the spider gears i can no longer slide the spider gear back to get the clip off the axle...
or am i looking at it wrong?
maybe just weld the 2 small gears using 2 bars across to each other?
