worsley spur shiney trip sat 30th

Post by mike »

  Thats right shiney trip.

The aim of this trip is practicing vehicle placement and picking paths for vehicles running 31" or less rubber and no lift kits so no vehicle damage occurs. Emphasis will be on preventing damage ,spotting where it can/will happen and marshaling people through troublesome areas.

Track conditions are dry which gives the perfect conditions for a slow and careful trip up picking the best and safest route for the low riders.

No more than 4 vehicles + mine to keep things manageable.
will pm the time of the trip to those going so we dont get gate crashers and their 35's

PRS required and some patience

will try to get as far as possible and then if need be turn around. I went up there today and got 1/2 way up with ease. I realise the harder stuff is after this but there is nothing wrong with at least trying

i'd hardy call worsley spur a shiney trip anymore from recent events.. perhaps mayb the kowia would be better or some tracks on the hills like huntsbury, stock routes over the hills would be more suited to inexperienced drivers

perhaps we could organise another lake sumner / lake coleridge trip like last year for a shiney / training trip

Just a little back ground on me then, Ive done Lake Mason trip several times, with no hassles at all, find it an unchallanging drive in the sun.

Stock routes are just glorified gravel tracks if the ones on the peninsular are anything to go by.

Maybe I place my level a little above beginner, but I am still a novice, but you only learn, by pushing.

No where did I mention this is a trip for beginners but only for standard vehicles (beginners will just learn a hell of alot and experienced will get some good practice). This is all about improving vehicle/wheel placement and negotiating hazards instead of relying on 35's and/or a heavy foot to get you through.

only two places left.

Would have loved to have come and assisted, but I will be workin.

I have been up there twice in my truck when I had the factory 30" AT's on it, so yes it can be done even though it is severly rutted. Once in the dry and once in the wet (night trip).

Like you said Mike, you just have to pick your way through carefully.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Who was giving 35's shit? I certainly wasnt. I will be running 35's on my LR if not bigger. This is just a trip up worsley spur for vehicles that dont have them. We will be talking ways of negotiating hazards that are hazards to vehicles on 31's or less, route picking and most of all coming out damage free. A vehicle on 35's would normally just walk through the deeper ruts where 31's or less do not have that luxury and need to find an alternative route or go in guns blazing (this is where track damage happens).

learning vehicle and wheel placement goes along way to better 4wding technique no matter what tyres you are running. Worsleys spur track in its current state makes vehcile/wheel placement very criticial for vehicles running small tyres.

We went up in the weekend to the top you should have no problems untill you get about 3/4 the way up then there is a hole that you cant go around. We managed to get a surf on 32s through with a bit of spade work but broke some fiberglass flares.

In the dry its a good track for going slow and letting the tyres do the work, in the wet its another story :D

I think i know the spot, just after the gate isnt it. Its always been a problem that bit. There is a good turn around spot just before that or do we have any safaris that would like to put their hands up for track widening duty

Was a good trip, 3 shineys (yes I still class mine as a shiney as I dont want to put any more dents in it!! ) got to the bit where it is very very narrow and rutted out. We chose to try and get a vehicle through ( i volinteered mine ) and the only damage suffered was I sheared another dam CV !!! obviously it was on the way out just like the last one was

So from there we headed back down. It was an enjoyable morning with everyone needing a tow except the big safari  I was the only one to suffer any damage at all ( broken CV, again was on its way out anyway - troublesome things! ) and there were one or two nice displays of balancing on 3 wheels soon to be two wheels

I was one of the three.

Yep, was an awesome trip. I would have given that last section a dam good go, but seeing as there was a broke Toyota in front of me, I couldnt get to it.

Technically, my Saf did get towed, but that was only because I was towing someone else, and I was at the point of a rock, so just lost traction while towing, I had previously gotten past on my own.

But yes, I was towing others forwards and backs ;-)

Cheers guys

And yes, good show on finding the balance point of your truck Alex, but dont try to blame it leaning over on the passanger next time, lol

Good effort by all. Throurouly [sp] enjoyed it. Look forward to next trip.

Alas I forgot my camera after posting here reminding people to bring theirs  But alex should have an album up soon hopefully. (remember to disable the pop up blocker after creating an album and you go to add photos.)

Hi guys

Just sorting through the 174 photos taken to weed out all the crap! Alex wants all the pics of him being towed removed but he doesn't get off that easily

Excellent morning out, thanks for organising it Mike.
