Just got one today lil 1.1 motor seems like a cool peppy little wagon want to take up beach fishing any ideas what tyres and any other mods I could do?

I would imagine that the tricks that work for Suzuki's would work for the JNR. They are a similar same size and weight. If you are using on the beach; all terrain tyres work better than an aggressive mud tyre and air them down, so a compressor would be a good piece of equipment to have. Also make sure your recovery hooks are well mounted and get a good quality snatch rope or strap.
Being such a light wagon, which would be an advantage on the beach, I would try to keep it light; so would resist the temptation to throw a winch and bar work all over it. A good set of spot lights are an advantage if you are planning on returning back down the beach after dark.

What size are the standard tyres? If it is easy to find decent tyres in the standard size then keep the same size, you don't need massive tyres for cruising up and down the beach and they will just make it use more fuel, your speedo will be inaccurate and probably not as quick on the road either.

wider tires are better for on the sand aswell but the standard ones should be fine but as said above make sure there aired down

Not really. Wider tyres mean you are trying to compress more sand, which takes more effort making the engine work harder. Taller tyres are better for sand because you have a longer contact area which is spreading the weight on the area which is already compacted. Make sense?

just don't air down too much as you don't want to be popping beads on the beach.

wider tyres are good as there is a larger contact area on the sand so the pressure on the sand is spread over a wider area so more likely to float over it than dig into it. If you are just using it for the road and beach then standard size is all good or maybe just a slight increase to get a bigger sidewall and more comfort with better bump absorption. Also lower tyre pressures help with this too.

The only trouble with letting the pounds outta the tyres on a light rig is "most" of the 4wd rubber is very firm in the sidewall...

I have 30 x 9.5s on a 5.5 rim with tubes on an SJ, must have a slow leak as once again thought the right front looked a little low - got gas and went to check it and once again the gauge read ZERO (literally) with only a little spread on the sidewall... ok - I noticed it last week and been driving round on it on seal at over 60k (get ma drift) and still have even tread wear

Bugger paying for recovery mats. grab some carpet off cuts for sticking under your tyres to get ya going if you get bogged. also a couple of buckets to fill from the sea - wet sand is far firmer than the dry version

yeah mud terrains are shithouse in the sand hah. any wheelspin in my pajero = just digs huge holes.
If it's a rather light vehilce you might not need to really air down at all. best to try it out etc.
I don't really bother airing down on most beach situations. At scotts ferry in the rangitikei region it's really soft so I just make sure I keep the wood into it and pick where I stop. doesn't do much for fuel use though lol.

but airing down your tire increases the surface area of the tire does it not?? so having a wider tire with more surface area will have a simaller affect logically.

yeah i have a sj with the same tire size as yours and i have found a difference driving on the sand with the tires aired down (13psi is the usual i go down too) and i have found it makes a huge difference IMO

all that tyre shit is rule of thumb, yep you want non agressive tyres or they'll be digging you down instead of pushing you forward, yep you want them aired down so theres a better footprint sitting on top of the sand instead of slicing down into it, yep a wider tyre helps put a bigger foot print on top of the sand but its also a lot more drag so its a bit of a ballance between HP (and clutch ) and how much drag you can afford before you find yourself running out of steam and bogged down in the sand with a smelly smoking clutch the thing that does go without saying though is no matter what you drive on sand you have to drive it like you stole it or you'll be the one burried up to your door handles with everyone else driving past you, the moment you hesitate its game over

This is what I was trying to point out. With a wider tyre there is more of a 'wave' of sand in front of the tyre. With a taller but not wider tyre there is less drag because you have the extra length of the contact area without the extra width which causes drag.

i see what you fullas mean what i was trying to point out is that having a wider tire has the same affect as an aired down tire

I have something close to a JNR, an iO. great little 4x4 very under rated! with 31s on mine i normally put my mates with there big toys to shame
