Post by vvilly »

Hey all i'm going to hook up a reversing light to my truck.

I have no issue hooking it up to the tail light. My question is can i run the same light off a in cab accessory switch as well.

You may have some issues come WOF time.. Assuming that your truck is road legal...

http://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof/general/lighting/reversing-lamps

They tend to get a bit twitchy about rearward facing white lights that can be operated independently of when you physically select reverse gear...

Unless it qualifies as a work light.. Or as they are called now "cosmetic lamps"

To wire independently it must be wired so it doesn't work when headlamps are on (maybe not so independent after all??)

If you can't reach the switch from the drivers seat you'll be fine.

I have mine wired up with a three position switch, off, reverse lamp triggered, and on. Use a couple of relays to switch it.

Haven't had any WOF issues but I suspect the locals are pragmatic about most things.

My reversing/work light is just independently switched with the switch right next to the steering column. No WOF issues so far.

Mine has no reversing light, but there is a switch by the ignition switch that turns on a rear facing spot light mounted above the ute tray, great for reversing and passes a WOF without question.
I don't use it when driving forward, if I did I would expect a ticket from Mr Plod, not to mention some rather annoyed drivers behind me.
