Terrano wont stop!

Just had a situation where my 2.7td would not stop...... turned the key nothing ...unplugged the key nothing had to pull the airbox off and snuff the airflow.
Any ideas ??

Could be a faulty ignition switch, i know mine sometimes would just cut out while trying to start etc, ended up being the switch, otherwise it could be runnaway.

was it gaining revs when doing so? or was it just idling.

also, does it have a turbo timer?

Just idled did not gain revs totally unplugged the key switch thought it may be the fuel cut off solenoid?
anyway you can test either the ignition switch or the solenoid.....actually where is the fuel cut off solenoid???

Two things come to mind. The run solenoid is stuck in the run position or the alternator regulator is stuffed and causing a back feed to the run circuit.
To stop it, try unplugging the solenoid if it still won't stop tap the fuel pump to try dislodge the the run solenoid. If it dose stop, check for voltage at the solenoid. If there is power there without key on or engine running then it may be the run relay is stuck. If it stopped when disconnected and there is no power at the solenoid wire after the engine stops then it will most likely be the regulator. Get it to do it again, leave key off with engine running and try disconnect the small plug off alternator to confirm regulator fault.

I think the run solenoid is down at the fuse panel under dash.

What I can tell you, however, is that the voltage regulator is the little barrel thing sitting on top of the alternator which looks like a AAA battery cut in half.

in my case l took it to a sparky all up cost $56

You're right Josh....not your strong point
The part he just directed you to is the suppressor used to get rid of electrical noise from radios etc.
Voltage regulator is buried inside the body of the alternator.

it should kill the circuit.

Something to help out later on if it happens again (and helpfull when 4x4ing) would be to put your own fuel cut switch in, really handy for if you roll over or another emergency,

im looking at doing this on my terrano a bit later (so much on the to do list) as it seems like a good safety measure.

Unplugging ignition will do jack to this system as far as diagnosis goes.
The run solenoid is the single wire coming from the injection pump to the loom behind battery and power steer pump. One has to wonder if these kind of things need to be clarified then, I say, pay someone to fix it. It may be a bit out of your league.

That maybe good advice but its easter monday a public holiday and I am 500 k's from home so I thought I would seek some advice. I have never heard of a run solenoid and I admit that electricals are not my strong point but Im not an idiot.

hes not trying to call you an idiot, hes trying to say it could be one of those things that could have the truck off the road for a while and it may be easier to put it in a garage.

it could be something simple, it could be something rather complicated.

Too true, but when someone asks the same question over and over and gets the same answer from half a dozen different people but thinks thats not the answer they're looking for, then of course your'e going to get the piss taken out of you.

I see where confusion has come from. Fuelpump shutoff solenoid vs ignition relay. Could both be called run solenoid. Read Sibainmuds original post, and think of the solenoid on fuelpump.
He has given a very good fault finding method here.
Note that it could be a mechanical or electrical fault causing problem.

Have you got it fixed/ found the problem?

And being away from home on a public holiday with an engine that dont stop, compared to having one that won't go?? Prob nothing to get too stressed about... (did you see 'dangerous roads' where the safari didn't get switched off for four days as it was so cold the diesel would quickly freeze?)

Try not to get jumpy, not everyone has telepathy and knows you're situation.... And a rude responce to someone who gives great mechanical advice, well they might just not be so willing to help next time...
