Googled it and budgets for this varied massively . I have a lil 1000cc power house little 4wd truck factory it is meant to have 30 horse but i think it never had anything close. I will only be for the farm top speed isn't a target . Cost for a new motor ( as it is nearly blown) is $3500 imported as the Subaru samba is hard to find in nz . The options on google have been varied from using a fork lift motor onto transfer case as these motors have a factory reverse on the motor. Or a bigger normal DC motor on to gearbox . No clutch required just pick a gear and go . I do need reverse and 4wd .
Prices to do this on line are quoted from 2g to 25g
I purchased the truck for $3500 afew months back and a blown motor I have few options on what is worth spending on it

Where abouts are you? Suggest you update your location.
The Sefton Garage, north of Rangiora and Christchurch sell these small trucks for farm use, complete with ATV tyres.
He may know of a 2nd hand engine . Likely much cheaper than converting to electric unless you have done all this yourself before...

Re: Anyone done an electric motor conversion
the expensive part of electric conversions are the batteries and controllers
my 4wd is not a truck

Re: Anyone done an electric motor conversion
there was a guy up around the coromandel that done a electric conversion on a Citreon c3 i believe, but it was only a rear wheel drive.
have you thought about putting something like a suzuki engine or similar in it instead? there may be cheaper options out there.
what sort of room do you have in the engine bay/compartment?

Dirtydog for a 19 year old you seem to have an awful lot of experience on everything; any 4x4 ever made, any engine ever made, mechanical engineering, offroad expedition & driving techniques, fabrication, boats, guns, spear fishing, fishing, motorcycles, electricity, city planning...
I think you're well intended but echoing what veterans such as Sadam and kbjj have said before (by no means a veteran myself):
1. Some people make major purchase/mod decisions based on the information they see on this site
2. The bush is a lot more fun than the internet
3. As a general rule, older people have more life experience/knowledge and should be respected for that and treated accordingly
Hell I'm 28 and was first introduced to 4x4 when I was 7, but theres still a tonne to learn, and thats where the older and wiser people come in.

Dirty dog, think what he is trying to say is your too young to know anything at all so best just keep quiet........opps Im only 27 so I best shut up too

Re: Anyone done an electric motor conversion
so what if im young?
as ive said before, when it came to doing the sas on my truck, none of the older guys new what would work, it was a 23 year old that suggested looking into the transfer cases etc and look at what came out of it.
now back on topic, if you want to tell me something like that just pm me instead of taking up space on the thread.

This website might help:

It'll be cool to see this thing going. Your fuel bill should drop dramatically as power from the grid is heaps cheaper than power from pump gas.

Was being sarcastic, lax2wlg needs to stop being a dooch bag. Your right.....enough said. Loving the electric idea (first reason for looking at this thread).
I would imagine if you could get an electric forklift or something similar then you would be away. Massive torque with electric as well.
As for gearbox then doing some calcs will soon let you know what gear to use. Direct drive with the right diff might be all thats needed. Could mount motor on the diff then.
Food for thought.....
Re: Anyone done an electric motor conversion
me and my brother were toying with the idea of having a 4wd buggy, using 4 smaller motors powering each wheel seperatly, was a while ago, brother is now doing his aeronautical engineers degree.
think it would be a little too much for just a farm hack unfortunatly.
what sort of 4wd system do these things have? select or alltime just out of curiosity.
