I've got a recurring handbrake problem that's stumped me, has done this since I've owned this truck (4yrs) & is getting worse.

Handbrake lever gets hard to pull up, dosen't feel right then handbrake starts losing holding power. pull it apart at the drum & the drivers side shoe is worn down to nothing, other side slightly worn.

Action seems to work ok, I think it works by pushing the drivers side shoe over first then the other follows.

I've completely changed the whole handbrake set up before with another one from a wreck I had but same shit, had the cable out & lubed it. All this was done about a year ago but truck has proably only done 500km since (offroad).

Anybody got any ideas, starting to really piss me off.

how are u adjusting it up im unsure how they work but just from a mechanics poin of view that's springing up to me where u based?

Adjusting so just starting to grab then backing off 1 knotch.

After posting went back out to shed & had another look, this time it's actually ripped the lining right off the shoe, was sitting in the drum

I suspect One notch isn't enough... I did that on my Playdoh and when the disc got hot and expanded it grabbed on the handbrake shoes... Got even hotter real fast...
I normally do the same as you but back it off 4 to 6 notches...
I suppose it depends on how much it moves with each notch.

generally if the linings are parting off the shoe then it is a water issue.

ive had it happen to me on the rear drums when i have parked the truck up after a hard run when she was "swimming' lots
water gets into the lining and steel surface.

this has become noticeably worse since i started transporting mudlva around verse driving her home after a hard run. driving her home used to dry everything out (including all the mud caked in the radiator )

Thanks for the replys, just put it back together again, had some old shoes lying around from last time(s), remember only 1 side wears??

All works as it should (again), will adjust & see how long it lasts this time.

Might be time for a line lock style park brake Rog.
After all it's not like it needs to pass a WOF.

I think you might be right Mark, my back can't handle groveling around underneath the truck at odd angles much more.
