hard on glow plugs and radiators crap out causing heads to go. 5th gear farks out if your lazy and don't change to 4 going up hills.
so change gear. maintain cooling system realy well and youll be right.

mine has 225k and still pulls like a school boy. has had the head done at 150k tho, which im told to expect a head gasket every 100k?
they are also gutless under 2000rpm but go nicely above that.
they are mechanical type pump.
not a bad vehicle otherwise

gearboxes will last longer if you dont try and load it under 1500rpm.
definately put in a new radiator at any sign of water loss..
the WL-T motors are really good, our work ute has done around 450,000kms and still runs mints, doesnt use a drop of oil/water.. unlike all of our low km hiluxs

cheers guys, waiting to hear back on one for sale locally.
In addition, would it be worth waiting a couple of years or spending $4-5000 more and getting the later 3.0 ranger model, either in ford or mazda?

My old man loves the things has had bounty's and couriers, BT 50's and now a ranger since i can remember. They have come a long way, how ever like the Hilux brand there asking price is high vs other brands for equivelent features(and some times later models).
And then there is the issue of which brand internally. Do you spend set amount on a courier or buy the BT50 for the same price. depends if you really want that blue oval bad enough.

Hiya
Both Couriers and Rangers are good vehicles,
We had a 2000 XLX Courier 2.5T/D with 179,000ks on it when we sold it back in 2006, the only problem we had was with the alternator and had to get it reconditioned,
We Brought a 2010 Ranger in Oz, 3.0L intercooled diesel with the auto trans, awesome ute! tons of power and very comfortable on those long Aussie adventures,
We brought it new but soon realised it has torsion bar front suspension which is only good for a 50mm lift also the auto (which I swear by) doesn't lock up on steep downhill descents, had to find a trans place to reprogram it
If those two things don't bother you go for the Ranger, they are good value for money
Cheers

I've had a Bounty/Courier (now 5 years old) and currently have a BT50 (now 1 year old as work utes and although the Bounty was good at 2 years old it's definitely struggling now (only done 170k) but it's not a patch on the BT50. BTs are really high geared but have so much more power and are just much nicer to drive in general. Just my 2 cents worth mate.
