So Ive just been for a little trip over the weekend, after popping on some 33's and after wopwop adjusted some settings on my fuel pump (http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 46&t=35149)i thought I'd keep a check on some numbers....
Distance covered: 652km
Fuel used 71L
Fuel cost $101.00 (@Z)
RUC cost $31.29 (@$48.00per 1000kms)
KM per litre = 9.2
Cost of travel per km = 20.2c
Expected distance from a full tank = 872km
Cost to fill @ $1.41 x 95L = $133.95
In contrast, my 4.0L petrol ZJ on 33's was doing around 32c per km, based on 550km per 87L tank @ todays price of $2.04 per L.
So to compare over 652km:
Cruiser, 1hdt on 33's, including RUC = $131.70
Grand Cherokee, 4L on 33s = $208.64
Difference = $76.94
(NB: Distances as per GPS, not from speedo)
Additionally, taking the difference in regos between Diesel ($410.00 p/a) and Petrol ($280 p/a) the difference of $130.00 will be consumed in the first 1030kms the 80 series does. (approx thereabouts)
After that, the 80 is on a winner.

Interesting stuff, so thats pretty much 1/3 cheaper with the diesel. I wonder if engine servicing costs would offset this, presumably the diesel needs more frequent oil/filter changes. 9km per litre sounds pretty good to me for a big LandCruiser on 33s.
When my buddys Discovery 1 was in a bad state of tune, he estimated it was costing him .50c per km in fuel alone.

lax2wlg - Dunno about servicing regimins, Mines due in another 3000km, but dont know where that started from (sticker on the windscreen from the previous owner doesnt say.) however, i would doubt that diesel oil and filters for the diesels would be much different, if at all.
1nzsafari - Is the 1HD-ft the 24valve version? (sorry, not familiar with anything outside of whats relevant to me re the yotas at this juncture)
Know of two chaps that went river wading a while ago, both trucks on 35s, departed the same place, camped at the same place, did everything together, returned to the same place, same everything - aside from one being 12valve, one being 24valve. Apparently the 12valve used just over half the amount of diesel as the 24valve over the week they were away. 12valve may no have as much grunt as the 24, but with the figures Im getting to what I understand the 24's are getting, Im happy with what Ive got.

remove all the emisions crap and slap a bigger zaust on it and it will get 600 easy without adjusting the pump, even more if you do.
i get 600 - 650 out of 70ltr fill out of my 24 valve but am also making a fair bit of smoke

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

Bog standard 24 valve, 96. 360,000ks. Admittedly I drive like a freaking nanna, but get between 650 and 750km per tank, depending on the travel. Admittedly use it daily as my commuter and much of that is motorway, but still at peak hour... I keep a detailed logbook and have averaged around 33c/km in the past year, including maintenance, licensing and RUC. Not on 33's mind you, running standard 275/70R16s on road and swapping to KL71s for off which is a small proportion.
Re: 80 Series fuel numbers with 33's and fuel pump "tweak"
Recently I conviced the old man to modify his 80 series rather than buy something different, he tows a 6m alloy boat (2500kg empty) and hates slowing down on hills.
For $1200 I had a large front mount intercooler fitted and a 3" exhaust from the turbo back made by a fabricator in chch, The only part supplied was the intercooler ($160)
It has made a very noticeable difference in power but the difference in economy is huge, it has done 170'000kms its a 12valve auto, on the open road not driving slow and powering up hills it easily gets 600+km to a tank
highly recommended mods !!
he still isn't quite happy (god only knows why he only does 3000km a year in it) but we are now looking into a fuel pump tweak and slight boost increase (if anyone has done this and can point me in the right direction please give me a pm)

a) Re the intercooler and exhaust for $1200.00... nice deal, here its $1200.00 for the exhaust alone.
b) Re fuel pump adjustment, theres a clue for ya in the first post.
