4X4-2X4 kits for 80 Series?
4X4-2X4 kits for 80 Series?
I'm looking at buying a kit that will turn my full time 4X4 into 2X4 after disengaging Asin hubs and the center diff.
I know there are a few kits out there that do this.
But I started this thread to ask if there's any of you that have done it already?
Are you happy with the results?
What problems if any have you came across?
What brand of kit are using or what do you recommend?
I know one talented person here in Chch that can do this job at a minimum cost buy just welding some parts together in his back yard that will do the same job. But I'm interested in a warranty or a guaranty on the job. And he can't do that. All he can say is, that he's never had one fail before.
In advance, thanks for any input.
Pete.

Its not really a backyard job pete, involves quite a bit of machining and thinking. My process is not one Ive actually disclosed to Rick as theres more than one way to skin a cat.
Cheers for your interest though

I can respect that 2's.
Once you can offer a warranty on your work? People will be lining up mate. No doubt. But till then, I'll go with a the tried and proven. But you got me interested in it for sure.
Thanks.

The dealer down here for Marks Adapters I'm guessing would have to install it for warranty purpose?
So that's one brand I'm aware of. Just wondered if there were any others?

It is possible to machine your own centre diff and nylon bush and then just buy the manual hubs you want to run seperatly

Looks like maybe you want to buy the kit and fit it yourself (by the inflection of the above quoted post)
If so, I don't know of many (unce unce unce... if any... unce unce unce) manufacturers that are going to give a warranty on the basis of their kit being installed by unqualified persons.
Then again, I suppose if a person fits it themselves they can't then cry that it wasn't done properly out of the workshop. They've then got their own guarantee that it was done properly and to their own requirements. Makes sense.

A mate just put free wheeling hubs on his drove it round with the diff lock in and hubs out
Reckoned it was a big saving in fuel
He was doing resumble k's as he used it for a daily and was going to all the trials meets around the north island

Was his manual or auto?

Just talked to him it was Auto
As well as a fuel saving he said it also improved power

Re: 4X4-2X4 kits for 80 Series?
the problem with the budget conversion (free wheeling hubs and lock the centre diff) is that everthing is still spinning! and defeats the real purpose. i then removed the front prop shaft so that removed all the rotating mass and that was the real deal ,did that for about 6 months before buying the marks kit. now sometimes i wish i had the full time 4wd system....but then i cut a big drifty and forget what i was thinking

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
Re: 4X4-2X4 kits for 80 Series?
With any of the kits can you make it 4wd with centre diff not locked? Full time 4wd does have its advantages at times. Perhaps just putting on hubs is a compromise?

Sounds like you've already made up your mind on the warranty requirement but from my experience with 2's work, no problems. And I do quite a few km's.

I did the budget way first (just free wheeling hubs) and all it did really was make the steering feel lighter. Something else that happened was my axles and cvs didn't like turning unloaded because my bronze cv bushes were worn so it vibrated like hell at speed. The marks kit is the way to go. I got mine from suzolla.
