Trawling the NZTA website I found some great info on fixing this for those affected;

My trucks all good luckily, but for those with the issue, with the above, scrapping your vehicle may no longer be necessary (for economic reasons).

I cant see how if you had a little rust in this prone area that before warrant you tidy it up put underseal there make it look clean job
how the f are they going to know would they scape it off
or would they ask what are you hiding
how far does the bull go alot of inpectors dont ever look

It is a know issue. Not like. oh there is a spot of rust you should clean it up and put some POR15 on it... It is oh there is some signs of rust which is caused by the double sandwich of steel under the rear seats which cannot be treated to which the larger issue as a whole needs repairing.

It is like putting icing on a cake that has to much salt in it the reciepe. looks good tastes like...well ...salt water.

that's correct but if rust is spotted and the owner tidies it up and then goes for a warrant good for them what I am saying is would the warrant inspecter ask that all the underseal or paint be removed

yeah unfortunately they know what causes it, and the inspectors know from the issued article that once that "rust spot" appears it is a sign of a more major issue.

well if you tidy it up they wont see rust will they stuff them

I've bit my lip on this topic too long.

As soon as the WOF inspector sees that an attempt has been made to repair anything in this area they will investigate further and with a fine tooth comb.

It is a common and well known fault and they will not skimp over this at all.

If you attempt any repair you had better do it by the book as you will fail your WOF and risk placing any passengers at risk in the advent of a crash etc. Not to mention any possible criminal charges you yourself may face.

Do it once and do it properly.

Indeed. Spray it with (black) highlighter, make it easier for the inspector

I have one of there trucks it have no rust I think its a bit heavy handed
as far as underseat goes I would think there are lots of trucks out there been sealed up and good luck to them all
Who says spraying with black is a repair its painting is it not not metal welding new Zealand gone PC mad

RYME I little bit of paint will make an old terreno what it aint

I have to be honest all jokes aside if I had rust in the rear seat areas what I would do is just remove rear seats and belts this would as far as I am concerned would be the best less cost way to go for an average 1990 model it would still run and be able to put things in the back
like an old sofa
