So after a fu@#in big session in woodhill my idle is really high (15-2k at idle). I removed the carb and cleaned the sensors using CRC throttle body cleaner but it hasnt solved the problem so Im thinking Ive got a vacuum leak somewhere. Are there any obvious leak spots I should check first?

OK - So had the TPS replaced and it idles fine (800rpm), the old one had a permanent reading of 1 volt. But, after sitting for a few days is back to idling up around 1500rpm... gremlins. I did quite a bit of research and at a guess Im thinking the upstream O2 sensor - any comments??

BTW - The O2 sensor from repco or anywhere in NZ = $195-280 plus GST.... Or online for $75 delivered. - Whats going on with prices in NZ, everytime I need spares I get these fu#$kin stupid prices locally like they strapped them to their backs and swam the parts here from China..

Does the idle get better after warming up?

Bad O2 sensor will burn lean or rich (probably rich), but that should not have an impact on idle that much.

As for part pricing, I gave up on local stores a long time ago for Jeep related items. Its simpler and cheaper to import them. Try www.rockauto.com

If its an absolute emergency, I have gone back to the dealer (Continental Car) and they have been very helpful and reasonable (or as reasonable a dealer part can be).

Nah the idle remains now at around 1500rpm regardelss of cold or hot (might be a little higher than 1500rpm when cold). The truck is my weekend drive so its OK to sit while I sort it out. I might have two probs maybe the rich run is the 02 sensor and the high idle is something else all together.

Can I use any 4l i6 throttle body? Might have to swap out all sensors and see if it may resolve. The mechanic who replaced the TPS and flushed the trans (25l of ATF!!!) noted chuffing from the exhaust which I assume will affect the downflow 02 sensor? He said he noted it at the gather in the headers. Is the downflow 02 before or after the gather on the extractors?

Side note: All this occurred after I swamped the truck in woodhill....

Are you able to get the codes from the PCM? Rear O2 only tells the computer that cat converter is working correctly. It does not control anything else on 4.0l engine. Front O2 controls fuel mixture.

Sorry, I forgot what model do you have?

Also, are there any faults that wont throw a OBD2 code? Check engine light is off

side note mate if shes a auto might wanna check the oil....they can drown in fark all water round em .........couple on here can relate to that.....

sh!#.. OK will check the oil in the light of day... I assume the mechanic I took her to would have checked that after I mentioned the drowning he's really switched on with jeeps but I ll check none the less.

Ive noted the truck really struggles to crank now too, starts up kinda like an old rod ie "lump" "lump" "roar"...

Have you check your air filter that its not blocked? Water probably never got to the engine, but the filter might be choked causing these problems.

Added to the list, Cheers TJ. Im relatively new to owning a 4x4 and threw it balls to the wall the weekend in Woodhill. The guy at the gate said jeeps dont get stuck so I figured the swamp was fair game.. not knowing the whole "breather issue". I then gunned it full tits through a massive puddle which I assume would have also got to my air filter through the Banks Air Ram with its huge opening... Live and learn.

With twice bigger opening of Ram system, its very possible the filter got covered in mud. Have a look.

Hey there I had problems like yours when I drowned my TJ ( yes being stupid racing a mate down a river bed, decided to take a shortcut , but it wasn't was it ) anyway, had a crack in headers which opened up and sucked in copious amounts of water, which in turn fried, or nuked or steamed or boiled (or all of the above) my O2 sensor, ran rich ( a default setting I was told) and idled faster than usual, not sure of codes as the auto diagnostics dude cleared them too fast, but all good now with sensor replaced, and new headers on, ( no more cracking, yay), good luck sorting problem out

OK, so the jeep has sat for a few weeks now as Ive been really busy but need to get this sorted.

So far Ive spent $800 on the trans to get rid of the water (flush etc) but I can still feel slips and holds in the trans which means Im sure Im up for a rebuild as the plates will be delaminating.

Ive also noted a crack in the gathering point of the exhaust manifold just above the upstream 02 sensor which Im assuming will be what has lead to my issues with idling etc.

At this stage Im up for;
Trans rebuild and a new exhaust manifold assuming this is all that is found being about 4k from the quotes Ive had.

Im wondering if with the potential 2/3k for a trans rebuild and 1k or so to fix the manifold if Im better to swap in a complete engine and trans from a donor vehicle. 350 conversion? Im at my wits end and really only have a couple of grand to throw at this problem..

v8 it...........keep a eye out on tm for a 2nd trans ...did it twice that way on my old xj ...just had trans rebuilt for my tj now, came in under 2k but yeah read me jeep thread, re that one

Wow, yeah Im definitely doing the drive in drive out option for trans rebuild after reading that.

OK, So - I've now had the trans flushed almost immediately after I swamped it to get all excess water out and it seems to be running as it should. I've replaced virtually the whole exhaust sys including headers as it had huge cracks (includes replacing upstream 02 Sensor). I've taken the throttle body off and cleaned extensively including replacing the TPS.

The only thing that still remains as follows.

While at idle I'm fine a little high maybe (1000rpm)
While foot hard down i.e. accelerating up a hill (under load) I'm fine.

When I tap the accelerator at idle there's a hesitancy from the engine almost like its gonna stall. Also when I have my foot lightly on the accelerator i.e. just driving round the block there is a sound as if I'm going back and forth from 5 to 6 cylinders...

So Im thinking even though Ive replaced the TPS it may have issues from when the vehicle was running super rich with the exhaust cracks letting 02 into the manifold. Im going to try and get an Ohmmeter to see if there are any spikes in its operation... Urgh - just want it fixed!!!

yeah get codes pulled on it ,, saves chucking coin at it ....$50 plus gst mate just had his checked as farting and shit , was o2....

I have the scanner and can get the codes for you. I am central Auckland as well. No charge.

It did - that was the first thing to get a good soak and clean (proper K&N kit)....

The other option is to get something like this:
