Luck escape!!!!

Post by Moriarty »

revisiting the trip to Thompson's track 6/7/2006.

I did have a lucky escape.
after that trip, I was doing the usual checking and servicing and noticed that on taking the airfilter out, the bottom of the air box was coated with a thin film of mud. HOOO boy, that WAS close.
Musta happened when I was giving the wee twuck it's first swimming lesson, poor crittur was very close to drowning!!!

soooo... first view is the position of the intercooler and primary air intake.

Image

air intake is to the left as you look at it, at the same level as intcool.

next...

inside engine bay. rad is to the left, the intcool is directly in front. the round hole is OUT from primary air scoop leading to airbox.

Image

you can see the problem looming up, cantcha?

the solution, albeit temporary until I get a few more sctratches and dents

Image

if mud and water get THAT high, I am in serious schtoock!! will need help then, want I?

Further benefit, with the factory airbox remooved, I get a nice large place to put something, maybe a compressor? any ideas?

but looks bad up close cos I aint fussy about good looks. Just functionality.

my only thought would be that the temp of your intake air would be a lot hotter there and even with the intercooler there will probably be a loss in power.... just a thought. probably not noticeable unless you trick your mind into thinking there is.

:D Thats looks like the story!!!!

Food for thought............................

Take it one step further and make your self a little sheld out from near the fire wall, accross in front of the filter and back to near the fire wall on the other side. Could be welded/mounted to the intake pipe so it all comes out as one easy to remove unit for your waranty/service issues. The sheild would prevent the filter from getting dirty as quick, protect the intake from splashes and water thrown back by the fan, and possibly reduce the effect of hot air intake.

Go one further and fit a reverse facing aftermarket WRX bonnet scoop from Ripco............

Good idea, DB, the sheild inside I mean, the scoop is a dumb one!! LOL
However having modded the air intake, I am sure the waranty issues are well and truly shagged, remember its still only 15 months old and we done 28K already... as far as performance is concerend, it seem to be more responsive and more grunt. Or ,may be a matter of wishful thinking. Ben might notice, cos he's been in it.
