I have just taken my v6 auto terrano in for a warrant and to fix a hole in the exhaust y section, only to have the guys find another hole between the head and manifold. I have read up a bit about this and it could cost me a bomb...

Is my best bet is just to give it to the mechanic and see what happens? He has said if he spends more than about 4 hours on the one leaky manifold then he will probably be better off taking the engine out in which case he will do the other manifold as well just in case. The other exhaust section which he fixed today needed a gas torch on the bolts but came out pretty easy he said

What are your guys thoughts on getting some new headers? has anyone used these before? and maybe know a shipping cost?

Yep the manifold stud thing is a well known issue with the V6s, on my '87 VG30i I managed to get lucky and just retighten the studs, no rust & dry climate.

As it progresses it will make a ticking sound, particularly when the engine is warm and then you shut if off for 10mins, then restart. It sounds really bad but is just an exhaust leak.

Some people just live with it.. maybe start by seeing if any of the studs have actually broken yet, check their condition and tightness.

It would be a good excuse to do headers, but Personally I wouldnt start paying a muffler guy to get in there just yet.

its a bit hard to get a camera in there, but its a noticeable popping noise when you accelerate. Its drivers side rear cylinder

main reason I dont want to do it as I dont have any way of heating things up and if I take the header off and the stud(s) are fucked then I cant move the thing. The heat shields are also over the studs and the bolts wont move when I try as the exhaust is quite rusty. I am all for doing your own work but I am used to working on small old cars where you can easily do everything yourself/much smaller

There is also a real noisy squealing sound coming from the front end when the car is moving (people stopping to look at you as you drive down the road type thing). It feels like it might be the hubs or the wheel bearings, but again, I dont have the tools to undo the hub cover as the cap head screws are so ####### tight

edit: I did touch the hubs when I got home and they were only warm so maybe not them

I had this issue when I had my v6. cost me $450 at pitstop to get it fixed. they replaced the studs and reseated the manifold (shave, gaskets ect)

it lost some of its shoutiness but got some horsepower back
