considering a pajero

Post by haz77 »

Hi,

Im considering looking at a Pajero and wondered if there are any specific things to look for or avoid on these?

its a 2000 3.2tdi auto, import on 190'ks.

Im replacing a 95 terrano td27 manual as we want a bigger truck, more power & the k's are getting high.

Will mainly be used for towing horses or boat & skiing 1-2 weekends a month & 5k trips to work during the week, our trucks are working vehicles not city slickers.

I read about changing the cam chain guides every 50<60'ks but other than that any big service jobs they need at 200'ks or that should have been done by now & also do I need to worry about it having been subject to the Odometer being switched off & if so where should I look to see if the wires have been interrupted?

Cheers.

Seriously, no one has any opinions or thoughts on this?

Also thought about a petrol model but heard about the GDI's having probs with the fuel system so they are best avoided yeah?

I have one. I love it. It is purely an on road truck. Wife would kill me if I took it off road. But it tows car trailers with off road 4x4's with ease. It handles the caravan with ease too. I forget it is on the back sometimes. The 4m41 engine is steller. The triptronic auto is awesome for towing; I prefer it over a manual any day. I also have an 80 series cruiser and would tow with the Pajero over the cruiser. It is more car like on the road.
So long as the one you are looking at has had it servicing kept up with you should get long trouble free motoring. Mine has done over 280000kms and still drives like new.

They are pretty good trucks if serviced regularly, The drive flanges have a habit of popping out of the rear diff on the pre 2005 models, this can be fixed by upgrading the flanges that have a larger cir clip on them. Also the intake manifold should be removed and cleaned out on a regular basis

So im pretty close to buying an 03 3.2d auto on 208'ks, from a mitsi dealer, asked them about the cam chain & that I'd heard the chain guides need replacing every 60<80'ks, they laughed it off saying they have heard this said but never changed any guides, is it a myth or an actual service requirement?

Didn't see this post before. I have one and in addition to the issue stated below the oil pressure switch has a habit of leaking, $14 for a replacement unit and an hour or two to replace.

When changing brake pads, done force the fluid back through the master cylinder. Undo the bleeder and get rid of the excess fluid through there otherwise you can stuff the ABS/EBD unit and thats expensive.

Front wheel bearings need greasing every 70,000km or will fail.

The rear drive flanges need uprated c-clips, I think after 2005 they came standard like this.

Our Traction control light comes on every now and then, might be due to uneven tyre pressure though.

Ours has done 160,000km, the exterior is a bit rough but it's a good vehicle in general. Keep the engines well maintained as the local reconditioner says after 150,000km things can start to go wrong.
