advice needed for brain storm project

Post by KIWI_TERRANO »

Just come across this

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... &district=

thinking it failed compliance as its the 2.5 not 3ltr version and it wont have airbags

I have seen a project in Australia where he fitted a cab onto a 80 series and had to have the chassie extended and new bodys, engine and gearbox mounts made

What would be my main issues in following his same foot steps over here?

would be getting a 3ltr for starter, new mounts , chassie extension and then be running 33 or 35s on it

The reason it is not complaint won't have anything to do with the air bags but the fact that the engine doesn't meet Euro 4 emissions.

Putting cab onto an 80 series chassis is a lot of work and money, especially if paying $15,000 to for the body. Good project if you have the time, money and skills.

also have seen one floating round down south but was a extra cab

I would be trying to get him down on price of course as its practically a no use truck.

Ild just need a either a new 3ltr 1kd or chuck a 1kz in it with a 1kz gbox and transfer as it mates to both the 1kd or 1kz

Main think I want help with is knowing the legal side of it or who I can sit down and talk to about it

As it has never been registered in NZ you won't be able to in current form or either with any sort of motor swap.
Part of the compliance process is for confirmation from manufacturer that vehicle complies with certain regulations such as emissions. The letter from Toyota will state that when built it does not meet standards and therefore unable to be used on NZ roads, no matter what.

If you used the body on another vehicle/chassis then you will be using that vehicle existing NZ rego and only have to go through certification for the modifications. Basically rego goes with the chassis.

The extra cab Toyota body vehicle down south is possibly Bruce Hughes which is the body from the original "No Bull sheep shagger" Toyota adverts. Bruce already had the chassis and just replaced the body.

Talk to a certifier about your plans and they will tell you if they will work.

Sorry you have it wrong, your close with the last bit, by the time he has done body, motor, box, chassis and I'd assume some minor suspension mods he's over the 40% threshold (depending on who you go to some might just call it a toyota and not worry)
That makes it a scratch built... that means all he needs with the 1kz is the factory original emission control stuff for that motor....
The airbags and crash safety is moot as this is registered as a 4wd, we have a special exemption in cert rules just for us
This will mean alot more expensive cert and there are several stages where you'll have to get the certifier in before you continue
now you know you can do it I'm going to recomend you don't

Some simple maths
$15000 for your body....
$2500 for the 80 series rolling chassis
$3000 for the motor remember this has to include all the emission crap so includes exhust etc
$1000 for Drive shafts and balancing
$1000 for suspension mods
$3000 for a set of tyres and rims
$1500 for cert
$7000 for incidental stuff, I'm making this 20% since I don't know you, for me I've found that it is normally 10% but when you start adding new bearings brakes a sparky to do the wiring etc it goes up fast
Now this is all assuming you do the bulk of the work yourself... $35K alright it'll be cool but its a 4wd your going to beat on it... is it worth it ?

Cheers Reece

ps if you doubt my estimates I've been seriously modifying trucks trucks as long as this web sites been around and still do... I've even made a living from doing it

This is the help i need cheers mate

Would i be able to ring u for some advice?

Thinking if i got him down on price wouldnt be bad, and i could just use the 1kd thats in it and just get a 1kz gbox/transfer since it bolt up and puts output for front diff in correct spot, the guy in oz said the height the body sits u can fit 33 which is all i would really be going to so ild probably upgrade the springs and shocks if there naffed

I know the chassie extension wont b cheap and all the mounts will add up and driveshaft also would need a steering shaft for it, just running things through my head as it would be cooler than a 80series ute choped as it wil be a bit different and look sweet

If your farming out the work on it then definitly talk to tom he's only up the road from you
You are right it will have a cool factor... so long as you do another bar for the front  that just makes it look like a sangyong

It will certainly not have the current bar if i do decide to go through

Cheers will be in contact with both of you, i can easy do body mounts the tricker stuff like motor and gbox mounts will get toms assistance and a decent bar on the girl, say if it did come to 35k its still cheaper than a shagger and lifting etc

I would buy that one and a crashed one repair the crashed one then sell it while they are still asking megabucks for the things.

Then use that money to build an off roader.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

If its from PNG its Probably had a rough life, Roads there a shot, so suspension normally gets a hammering. And whenever cars go in for a service, they normally come out worse off and missing screws etc. We had an old work Hilux there, its got rolled and would be written off in most country...nothing a bit of panel beating will fix...looks like new now....nearly

You must have missed the chassie swap and possible new motor in the brain storm....

Had thought of that but im in the possition now to buy a tidy ute that can be my every day car as i need a ute for getting me to work, dog trails and rodeos and also build a single cab up with no reg for hunting and trips or spend the same money on one truck that does all thats why i was stewing the idea over
