4jg2 power increase..

Right, Im stuck thinking about the ways to sort my stuffed turbo for increased power..
Here are the choices..
Option 1 : Replace stuffed turbo with a new Isuzu core, enjoy stock power with a little added boost..
option 2: Machine stock Isuzu exhaust housing out to accept my VR4 14b TD05h and enjoy ~20psi with the occasional 25psi while i squirt methanol down it (during swamp action)
Option 3: Replace 14b compressor with 16 or 20G compressor, upgrade to a 8cm exhaust housing and compound with sc14 @~25-30psi
REMEMBER THIS IS NOT A ROAD VEHICLE, normal rules do not apply, Im currently looking at 4-4.5 inch exhaust, any size water to air intercooler.

sorry i should have added, this will be used with (eventually) 37.5" tractor tyres, in swap action and just general playing about on local forest muddy fire breaks etc..
I have experience with tuning diesels and building manifolds. I also have access to virtually any turbo combination i need..

or from my experience sell the Isuzu esp the 4JG2 before it costs you more money than its worth and buy a Toyota or Nissan!..

Only words of advice I can give you is that if you intend on running big tyres you will need some substantial strengthening of the steering especially around the tie rods. From my experience anything over 31-32" breaks tie rods

hey man for strengthening the tierods, i just undid one end and slipped heavy pipe the rite size over it, put tierod end back on and weld each end of pipe. strengthening the tierods will end up transferring the load and bending the steering idler though. i was forever bending and breaking front suspention and steering components with 33inch tires

Why not do something different and chuck a diesel v8 in it?
chev 6.2 would just about fit in the engine bay in one of these.
otherwise there is other diesel engines (if you want to stick to diesel) that would cost about the same as making the 4j reliable.
of coarse you have to destroy the 4j before anything else goes in, so i think force feeding it larger spoonfuls would be a good way to start

Yeah a transplant would be good but im gonna have a go at making 200hp out of the stock engine first.. wont be that hard.. might acually be happy with that. I have got a garrett GT2056 that i was going to use on my hilux but i might build a manifold for the boghorn instead. Run 30psi happy all day..

Decided on running a TD05 in the stock (machined) exhaust housing, and looking for a big primary turbo to build a good compound setup. Meh@30psi.
i will run the small turbo up to 25psi and no waste-gate on the primary so it will be 100% dictated by fuel supply, so when i switch the methanol on it should get interesting...
When the local dyno gets fixed im on there!

td05 is a fairly big turbo for the size of the engine. frigen huge for a primary turbo of a compound setup. your not really looking at running high enough boost to require a compound anyway.
more modern turbo will do that and more with better efficiency than a compound.
compound the td05 with a eaton supercharger (sc14 is way to small) but location and belts is a big issue.

Nah the TD05 should be fine with the stock Isuzu exhaust housing, im looking at only running 25-30 psi from just that turbo. I was wanting to trial my gt2056 with a gt3076 @ around 50-55psi.
By more modern what were you recommending? My GT2056 is probly the newest design of turbo ive played with.

td05 is commonly used on 4.2 litre nissans. while yours is the smaller compressor its the same (afaik) turbine. i just have my doubts you can burn enough fuel, when off boost, to wind up that big turbine. you may end up with boost starting high up in the rpm range.
for a single turbo a td04 would be a better size imho.

Hi There,
I have a 4jG2 in my truck and there is nothing wrong with this motor seems everyone under estimates this engine, I have heard the story's about them and the way to avoid that is basic maintance.
Anyway I have not done any mods to my 4JG2 I have not adjusted the fuel or added an intercooler anything like that but I did put a bigger exhaust 2.5" from turbo all the away through and I adjusted the boost and doing that made a huge power increase.

Thanks for the input Tweake, I have used far bigger turbos than this on smaller engines with good results, with the small exhaust housing it should be quite responsive. As its just going to be a toy for blasting along forestry tracks and crossing the occasional swamp it should be ok, im also gonna use it as the test bench for my compound setup.
I will be able to tell everyone about it as soon as my cage is finished, cant drive it without the rear chassis

Unfortunantly the local dyno is broken, the nearest one is 70km from here..
But as soon as its fixed sure..
Once ive built a new manifold for the gt2056 im going to be on the hunt for domething decent as a primary in the compound setup. so of anyone has a gt3076 , hx35 or simmilar kicking round id be keen.. might even be an idea to put a 20g compressor and TC05 exhaust wheel into my current turbo...
