Just done the wheel bearings in the rear diff of my 89 Pajero and after bolting the hub flange back to the diff I have about 3-4mm play if I pull on the studs,is this normal?the nut holding the bearing in place is tight,I have about the same amount on play on both sides.Rich

Nope don't sound normal for hub play on any vehicle I know of, can't the nut be shimmed up to take the play out
My only mitzi wheel bearing knowledge is on a challenger

they should probably use shims to adjust this play , if there is shims check the specs and remove shims and Dti the runout unitl its within spec , if there is ample adjustment it can be caused by worn differential side bearings / play between the axle spline and diff side gears from large amounts of beat down !!

Thanks for the reply, yea I always thought any play wasn't ideal.Rang a mate who's a machnic and he said a little bit of play is normal in the taper style bearing...... have replaced bearings, seals, pads and new rotors and just don't want to drive round and wreak things again.

Ok I am not a mitsi man but here is a link to the manual (I Think)
http://www.docstoc.com/docs/96933383/Re ... -Pajero-89

Now looking at the locking ring it is supposed to have the chamfer facing the bearing so it can apply the preload and get past the bottom of the thread.
Page 21.
Also there are shims to adjust end play when the hub is installed. Page 22.

Have fun...

Been doing research and have been to 3 garages including a Mitsubishi one but know one can tell me why I'm still getting play in the bearing, has new bearings pressed in and nut is as tight as it can go and when you bolt it into the housing you have about 5mm in and out play....even when you have it out you can move the bit that holds the brake on heaps, has anyone seen axles like these or have any sitting round? The only thing I can think of is the wrong bearing has been used and is too thin... So when you bolt it up the outer race is not pushing up against the bearing. do you have the old bearing?? If yes compare the thickness of them both when you drop the bearing in the race...

Not 100% sure if this will help, but had a similar amount of play when i put new bearings in the back end of a hilux. The play went away once axle was installed in diff housing as it had a slight taper that pushed against the bearing

Yip managed to get old bearing out and took to b n t, was measured up. So chucked the same bearings and seals back in. Came as a kit. I was told when I brought the truck everything was replaced, seals bearings and new Arb fitted and hasnt even done 2000km and wrecked the wheel bearings on passenger side. I have a feeling it may have had the same amount of play when it was set up to begin with and don't want to munt all the new bits....so really trying to figure out what's normal play for these bearings

Hey, I've been talking to Jason, and sounds like your axel is a similar setup to a d21 Navara. The shims between flanges give it away. Looking at the link that kbush put up (link works for me), page 28 shows the exploded view of the diff. It has a "thrust block" (part# 11) that the axel ends rub on. Need to see if you can fit this block into your ARB unit.

Wheel bearings on semi floating axles are of a looser tolerence so are naturally pretty sloppy. I found my rear wheel moved a bit on my vitara so replaced the bearing only to find that the new one was exactly the same. I think the loose tolerence is designed to allow for any misalignment through welding and assembly.

Cheers Jeremy, yea Jase rang me last night. Still can't view that link, tried at work but must be something to do with security settings...wondering why they wouldn't have put these blocks in when it was all set up. Gonna pull out diff tonight and take a photo, will chuck it up.Cheers Rich

Does that work?

The ends of the axle shafts will be a ground, polished finish. The taper roller bearings only take 'axial' load in one direction, needing the tips to touch (via the thrust block) so they can work against each other.
Hope that makes sense
