Auto coolers & Towing.

Post by oldblue »

Do's anyone tow a 4.1m caravan( approx ) behind a 70s Prado with an automatic box.
If so do they need an extra auto cooler, or are they OK.
Thinking about in the middle of summer when the wheather is really hot.

Come on Kev, you know the Japs don't build vehicles with towing in mind.
Put the most efficient after market trans; cooler you can find in the coolest place on the Prado . My recommendation is to bypass the original cooler(keep the heat out of the radiator) and fit an inline cooler. I know there's not much room but I'm sure you will find a place. The trans; will get bloody hot when towing. Use the trans; like a manual gear box, stops a lot of slipping between gears. Also if you haven't done so already have the radiator cleaned eg; top and bottom tanks off and while you're at it make inquiries about possibilities of going from two core to three or three to four will make a hell of a difference to the engine temperature and you know what the heads are like. Also Kev fit a Pyro; gauge to the exhaust manifold and drive off that. Happy Camping.
DON'T GET HOT,
FITZY.

There's room in front of the air-con condensor that could probably hold an oil cooler without to many dramas.

Just to give you an idea, I towed a trailer up to monks spur with 700kgs in the back a few times. It didn't overheat but the temp gauge did go to half way. If I do the same run/weight with the rear heater running the gauge will sit in the usual spot 1/3. This was done during summer.
