Turning corners, bumps etc causes a loud rattle from engine

Hi
Have a 91 Pajero, drives fine usually, but if you take corners quick or hit a bump as well as accelerate it causes a really loud graunchy rattle from the engine. If you slowly accelerate no worries. You can gun it in a straight line and its fine. It also lets a cloud of smoke go when it makes the rattle. Im thinking turbo but any other ideas?
Thanks
Daniel

I've had this problem in a landcruiser it ended up being exhaust was hitting firewall got a big crowbar gave it a tweak and noise disappeared.

thanks - ill have a closer look tomorrow, but the big cloud of smoke when it happens and type of noise makes me think its mechanical
forgot to mention - when it happens it loses power and the noise continues until you back off the accelerator, then ease into it and it drives off fine.

just took it for a proper drive, turns out its not just turning, its when its under load and you give it some juice. sometimes does it, sometimes not.
turbo looks good, no play etc. is it running lean perhaps?

You may have a fueling problem. Blocked filter??

I've had water in the fuel filter and under full throttle the engine has coughed and lost power temporarily until you take your foot off the pedal. Up hills it was embarrassing going from, 110kph down to 60 for no apparent reason.
Took a while to figure that one out!

Sounds like diesel knock. As the others have said, water or contaminante in the fuel/filter or (wild stab in the dark) EGR if they have one. Had same symtoms with some Nissans and as they were manuals we disconnected the TPS to disable the EGR system. Worked a treat.
Cheers,
