Hi,

Anyone here into long range target shooting?
Been doing a bit while I was up in Taranaki but in wellington now.
Seems to be a bit more organised with formal clubs competing in FT/R (Field Tactical Rifle) Discipline.

Keen for some informal shooting also if anyone is setup with land access and of course a bit of 4wding to get out there.

There is a Deerstalkers range in Upper Hutt.

When I did long range shooting it was at west melton in chch, 1000m and open sights, I doubt if welly has that lenght of range

Trentham has the long range
They have the Bellinger Belt (I think thats what its called) every year.
I think they shot up to 1000m

If you don't mind me asking. What rifle and rounds are you using for 1k distances? Factory or hand loads? Groupings?
I've been looking into it. Was looking at 338 lapua. But very pricey.

I have a mate in welly who is setting up a long range club on his farm,
I know he has gongs out to 1400m at the mo, Its not completely up and running but its not too far away, hope ya like wind tho.....

Hi Pete, it really depends on your rifle and caliber you want to shoot.

1000m is a very demanding shot on all but the calmest of days.

I own a Zastava LKm70 in 308. I hand load for it purely for accuracy/ velocity.
(You dont save money on reloading).
Shoots 1/4" 100m with factory barrel. I had the luxury of having Nathan Foster (long range guru) while up in the nakki to help me along.

Start with something like a 308 if you already have been shooting but want to try long range. Wont get you 1000M but you'll want to learn how to reload and shoot a mild cartridge that wont boot the shit out of you every time you squeeze the trigger.

Then comes range finders, ballistics calculators, anemometers, shooting mats, optics, rifle upgrades/ re barreling, copious amounts of practice and ammo ontop.

338Lapua is purely for the right enthusiasts as is the 50 BMG for the nut jobs in long range.

I ended up getting a Remington 700 300 win mag with a Millett LRS 6-25x56 scope. Loving the learning curve. But yeah, most long range clubs are full around the Mainland.

Here's a clip of my flatmate using it on a friends private 100m range.

This clip would have to be one of my favourite NZ long range clips.
The fellow that shoots this rifle and video goes through almost every detail of the kill, right down to autopsy.

yep sure is, he was stoked to be able to actually see the projectile. sun directly behind and the rifle and camera all in line.
hes getting good at these vids, a top shot as well tho lots of practice,

308 will do it. tight enough to put em in a chest-sized area with aperture sights...

Looking good pete, Supressor is a very wise move.

I tool the 308 to the range on sunday, abysmal on the rifle/scope alignment.

gotta bench the rifle again on wed with sig hopefully and sort out all the bugs.
