35" M/T for 16" rim - whats good value?

Post by Clint »

Looking for some recommendations on a new set of mud tyres. I have a fairly new set of 33" Savero MTs on at present that I am quite liking but I will soon need to go from 15" to 16" rims to fit some bigger diffs I'm swapping in (80 series rear discs are quite big!)

The diff swap & suspension upgrade will allow bigger rubber too so I'm looking at 35x12.5 or thereabouts MT tyres (315/75ish R16). Like my current Saveros I'd like to be at the more more aggressive end of the scale in terms of an MT style tread. The cruiser doesn't do huge miles but we do go on the odd road trip as well as playing in the mud so I do like to have reasonable road handling, so Simex type crossply stuff isn't really in the running, radials preferred.

So what's out there that's good in 16"?

Cheers
Clint

PS. 4x near new 33x12.5 GT Radial Savero MT plus 1x near new 33x12.5 Sumitomo Serengeti all on 15x8 steel rims to suit Landcruiser coming up for sale soon.

Kumho KL71s go good, and wear good, but are pricey.

I picked up 5 Silverstone extreme mt117 off tyreshoponline for $2100 fitted which is good buying, but they are more like a 34" even though they say 35s. Haven't tried them out yet.

hey Clint, what year 80 are the diffs out of, coz both mine and Tara's 80s run 15" rims

otherwise my choice would be the Maxxis Bighorn M/T 762

Hi Skid, not sure on year, should check back at the wreckers on that one. I've currently got the 80 diff stripped for inspection & locker install so I tried fitting the disc & caliper into a 15"x7" (ex Nissan GQ) rim that I had lying around & it definitely didn't fit, only just though. Maybe later models got bigger brakes?

Maxxis Bighorns do look like about the best deal I've found in a 315/75-16.

Cheers

I have a 96 80 Series. Not sure which year they changed, but they went to disks on the rear in the final few years and 16" was required. Mine are 16"
