1989 LN106 Hilux popping out of 2nd gear

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a 1989 LN106 Hilux but the seller has told me that it occasionally pops out of 2nd hear under a heavy load.

What could be the root cause of this?

Is it most likely in need of a near gearbox, and if so to stay away?

Feedback appreciated

I do not know if it is the same issue, my LN106 use to pop out of first, a mechanic said it could be the syncros on the gear box, but a google search told me it might be the bush on the bottom of the gear stick.

I replaced the bush on the bottom of the gear stick and the problem went away.

If it's happening under a load, is it more likely to be a bigger, more internal thing that will require a new gearbox?

Replacing the bush is cheap and very easy to do, It is worthwhile doing to see if it fixes the problem. If your gear lever has a lot of 'slop' especially while it is in gear, it is a good indicator that the bush is worn.

when mine was popping out of first gear it was when under load (or when engine braking down a steep grass track with a hairpin coming up, that was a suck not blow situation)!!!
Like other have said you will feel 'slop' in the gear lever when in gear if it is the bush.
