Re: planning my td42 turbo set up
have a search of the forum there have been plenty of threads about this
imo that turbo is wayy to big for a td42
rule of thumb for a diesel is use a turbo off a car with half the capacity ie a 2litre car

Re: planning my td42 turbo set up
Have done a couple of turbo steps on safaris now and after a couple lessons
have found tdo5s a really good unit. Have used the ones off a wrx with the 16g small wheel compressor. Boosts up nice and quick and holds smooth right to redline.
Most important that you put rebuild kit in if you get a second hand unit.
Not sure what kinda budget you have but if you doing it yourself then if you can making a good flowing j-pipe will work really well and save some coin as well.
Ideally you want something with an internal wastegate. Less plumbing and hoses to leak.

Depending on you budget i stock a setup using holset hx35 motorsport turbo using steam pipe manifolds with merge collectors ,

Re: planning my td42 turbo set up
first thing is which td42 you have. one has weaker pistons etc and not suitable for high power.
the next is what power are you chasing and can you afford IP to be modded.
if budget is limited it usually means sticking with stock pump which will limit what you can do. no point with big turbo if you can't pour in the fuel.
i would steer clear of any tuned collector style manifolds. they don't work well with limited fuelling. far better to make a log style and keep the runners as short as possible.
theres tons of info on patrol4x4 which will keep you busy for a few months !

it is a 89 silver top
i'm not looking to build a comp truck just want to get up hills a bit quicker
how many psi can these handle (looking at fitting a td05 16g) and what point do I need to mod the pump? I have to get it rebuilt anyway so if i'll need to do it i'll do it then
cheers for the help guys

good starting point if you havn't read it yet.
not sure a what point you would need to mod the pump. i understand there is a couple of differences over the years.
just ask on patrol forum.

i don't think any injection guy is going to let loose his trade secrets.

Re: planning my td42 turbo set up
Pump will depend on setup. Anything from winding up fuel a little, to adding boost compensator from a TD27t pump, or a plunger from a Landcruiser

Re: planning my td42 turbo set up
If your running a small wheel 16g then you won't need to mod your pump unless you want to run massive boost.
As for set up a good log style manifold and a good intercooler with a 3in exhaust will give you all the power you'll need.esp at low to mid teens boost.
Make sure you put a decent size oil return pipe to the sump as too small one will cause issues
