Went for a look up worsleys rd today,i can see why the locals are getting sick of 4wds up there....road verge 4wding near the track has fd the side of the road a real mess,then when i got up to the start of the track got death looks by mountain bikers just for driving up the access rd,went for a walk up the start of the track,what a ####### mess!
I hate to say it but even as a keen 4wd enthusiast i was discusted at the destruction that has been caused up there,total disreguard for private property and fences etc!
I agree with locals,it needs to be closed or the access very strongly controlled.
Lost for words to describe it. :roll:

I was up there a few weeks ago, a few of the fences/ posts have been knocked down and broken, track is a mess lots of water coming down it near the top half. The gate has been smashed at the start by some c*nt.

Mountain bikers were all nice tho.



Is it private property up there?

the track is a public road. Private property up the top on right side when heading up. they have always been anti 4wds, have had a few arguments with them in the past. sadly, much of the destruction is caused by muppetts and they are everywhere mate. I used to try and educate people about what is right and what is not. Combined Clubs Inc have a role here and from my previous involvement with them years ago when I was a club rep, the track was going to be developed into a road as the land is going to be developed. That was pre EQ though.

The rain plays a big part in the condition of worsleys, that combined with people that don't know what they are doing or people that don't give a f**k
about track condition or access ruin it for the rest of us.

I like worsleys based on the fact its the hardest track close to the city but i refuse to go when its wet, been once when it was damp and never again its more challenging in the dry your able to push the limits of your truck
(with no track damage)

Having the track maintained as a 4wd track would be awesome,
but i do see it becoming developed in to a road at some point.

all the trees to the east of track are going to be logged starting this november;so the track condition could change and access could temporarly be shut.

Exactly what he said. I have ALWAYS said that this road is best done in the dry as you can really push the limits and there will be nil environmental damage.

Only a dumb arse wants to go up there in the wet as there is only one line available and you will do damage to something (truck or track).
The rain is what chews it out the most though and unfortunately those who don't really know what they are looking at start blaming vehicles with no justification.
However, this is a public road and no one has the right to stop you from using it, Having said that, there is absolutely no excuse for leaving the confines of the road and traveling over (or through) fence lines onto private property. If you and/or your vehicle are not capable of completing the track, then don't do it!
There use to be several cameras set up near the top and the entrance and they were monitored, not sure that they are operational anymore however.

I wonder if like a track buffer they use in the states accompanied with signs would deter people that don't have a clue,

For example the buffer would actually limit the trucks that could get access on to the track by only allowing trucks capable of getting through the buffer,

Signs letting people know the risks of losing the track out right the damage that can be caused to track and vehicle in different weather situations.

last time i was up there was 10years ago,and was on a tredly,my truck and i are more than capable of doing the track but i chose not to yesterday as i could see that at some point there would only be one line to take and as mentioned by another post,in the rain damage would most definately occur,think ill wait till summer before going back :lol:

If only more people thought this way there wouldn't be an issue.

The track buffer idea is great, but this is a public road so it wouldn't be possible in this instance.
Lots of us have toyed with the idea of running a simple comp that is spectator friendly and can be run in an isolated area (ie 1 paddock) that has knarly arsed obstacles with a crane/telehandler to lift trucks off that fail. But NZ has a problem with population that means that the work involved/reward rate is not worth it.

I think that's why there is only one main anual event here in the Chch area. The Sheffield Mud Plug. :cry:
A mates family (the Graham's) own a 1000arces that boarders the West side of the Worsley track in the Cashmere hill side.
I can tell you first hand. They are sick of repairing their fences. But as it's a public road, that's the nature of the area. You'll always get muppets going up there no matter what signage is used.

Here's a wee look at a bit of not so distant history....
I used to go up there on my own for a wheel from the time a year or twenty back when I brought my first old landrover......
Here's a pic of my 2nd landrover and me :shock: .....22years ago at the bright young age of 19yrs :P , I repowered that puppy with a holden 186 X2 out of an old holden premier, boy was I cool 8)

This pic was taken in what we considered to be the most rutted and pic worthy part of the road back in 1990
