what would one of there truck return as far as diesel use
would they do better than 10 liters to 100ks

My 2wd could get from Dunedin to Christchurch and back on a tank which is 50L. Its a 700km round trip. So that's 7.2L/100km

When I tow something, ie, foot flat continuously , then I think the worst I get is 13l/100km

So I think your 4wd 2.4D would get between 9L/100km and 13L/100km

im looking at an old 2 wheel drive not 4 to buy sounds good
